How it sucks

12 months ago @ AmazonI am returning the camera to JR Music where Amazon shipped it from. Not too happy with JR's return handling. I would not purchase anything else from Amazon that is not coming directly from them.
12 months ago @ AmazonOn manual, I had the choice of a blurry mess at 800ISO, or a moderately less blurry mess at 1600 ISO that was so grainy it looked rather like an old newspaper photo. The other digital cameras in the group were quite capable of taking a photo of people with the castle in the background and exposing them correctly while capturing the glowing castle, but the 870 was not. Of course, no inexpensive camera is going to function all that well in darkness, and I wouldn't expect it to.
11 months ago @ AmazonIt reads different focal lengs (how much you zoomed for each photo) from each image's EXIF header and applies the right correction parameters to it! I have a script that uses "exiftool" to copy the original's EXIF header to the corrected image, because fulla does not preserve it. fulla also did not have a JPEG quality setting, but that was added recently (I use -e 97 which produces same or slightly larger files that my camera's originals).
11 months ago @ AmazonI knew this up front but we take very good care of our things and felt that it would not be a problem. Less than a month after buying the camera it stopped working when my husband went on a trip. The camera was not dropped or anything.
11 months ago @ AmazonGood image quality - The camera should shine in ideal conditions, and allow you enough control to get a good image when conditions are not ideal. The perfect camera would have good low-light (high ISO) performance, but it seems that's nearly impossible to find in a point-and-shoot these days. At the very least, ISO 400 should not look like a poorly-tuned TV.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe only problem with these is that you experience quite a bit of blurring when there's not 100% sunlight outside, so for every good indoor photo there were 2 or 3 bad. And of course, if it happens to be dark outside, you get a huge amount of blurring. If one were to look at my photo of the Disney World castle at 7 pm, the automatic setting photo came out as a almost completely black photo with just the windows in the castle barely visible (and that thing is pretty bright).
11 months ago @ AmazonI am giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because it is a great camera that takes great pictures. If yours is one that does not have an error, you will be pleased, but I would be nervous wondering when it was going to quit working. The close up picture taking was very good.
11 months ago @ AmazonI am sending it back because for $300.00 I expect it to work everytime I need it to. I am so surprised that a company like Canon that makes cameras with such great picture taking quality has dropped the ball on this major defect in what seems to be all their products. Just google Canon E18 or Canon lens error and you will see what I mean.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe pictures are like you were actually there, but I will admit that at the higher ISO setting, it can get a little fuzzy, but not too bad. The image stabilizer feature sold me on this model. I was looking at the SD750, but it lacked that feature.
12 months ago @ AmazonSo, despite loving the size and features and most things about this camera, upon arriving home it was packed up and returned. I wouldn't pay more than $150 for something that performs the way the 870 did. Who wants a camera that becomes useless every day at 6:30 pm?
13 months ago @ AmazonAlso, compared to the Sony T200, it fell short, which surprised me because of the Carl Zeiss lens. It does have more zoom, but the picture quality was beyond comparison from the Canon (negatively). The image stabilizer was worthless on the T200 in a slight shaking scenario (which I created in Best Buy).
12 months ago @ AmazonI am very disappointed. I contacted Canon and am awaiting a response. I hope this is covered under warranty or something.
12 months ago @ AmazonWhen taking pictures at night outdoor (or even indoor with low lights), there are couple of vertical lines appeared on the LCD screen. Is it normal? Do I have a defective camera?
12 months ago @ AmazonSo far with Canon, pictures came out too grainy, shadows, too dark, too bright and colors come out weird!!! So, I need help, does anyone know ONE setting that works for every occasion and pictures come out just how you see it. I spent many hours to figure out but so far no good results I would appreicate inputs.
13 months ago @ AmazonEverytime I'd open my camera case to take a pic the camera would already be on. Also a few pics would have white spots and at first I thought the lens was dirty but i read at the canon website that it occurs when theres a dirty/dusty spot. So I only had the camera 2 weeks but in those 2 weeks it made me miss the sd850, i just gotta live without the 3.0 LCD
11 months ago @ AmazonNow after about a month, the line has extended completely across the screen and the thickness of the line has increased. The camera still takes good pictures, but it is extremely frustrating every time I take a picture. I would not purchase again.
11 months ago @ AmazonWe bought this camera December 18th, it stopped working January 12th. I had an 8 year old Toshiba digital camera that showed up for work everytime I turned it on.
12 months ago @ AmazonVideo also looks pretty dang good, and while not a feature I considered when buying the camera, it was something I used quite often. The controls were all easy enough to use, and while the buttons and settings aren't the best designed things in the world, after playing around with the camera for an hour or so it's not too hard to figure out the main features and how to use them (although some features remain a mystery that even the manual couldn't solve). And on to the bad.
11 months ago @ Amazonalthough no optical zoom/autofocus during capture. Cons: - No USB mass device support, but gphoto2 works fine; I plug it on my Ubuntu box, run "gphoto2 -P" and all images
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonAll I could say is this is the absolute best P/S camera in it's class. I also have a Nikon and Canon pro Slr and this little gem rivals both cameras. I also have had other P/S cameras like the Nikon, Sony and Sanyo, this 870IS blows them all away, by far !!!
12 months ago @ Amazon- SD card: best cards ever, so fast, between picture and picture there's less than 1 second. Cheap cards too! - LCD and no viewfinder: I had never used the viewfinder before anywat and the LCD is just perfect, I can take photos in all conditions without needing a viewfinder.
9 months ago @ AmazonEveryone had been raving about what a great camera Canon makes so I decided to buy one before my trip to Thailand and China. It was everything everyone said; easy to operate, lightweight, excellent features like the ability to take panoramas and movies. I would recommend this camera to anyone.
11 months ago @ Amazon- Responsive user interface with excellent adjustments in manual bode like sharpness, contrast, saturation, and separate R/G/B levels! - In-camera editing with very effective red-eye removal (it amazingly detects where (even multiple) pairs of eyes are, and you can also manually point to any area you want to apply the reduction.
12 months ago @ AmazonWhat a great compact camera to take on a trip. We went to WDW and talk about some awesome pictures of the animals through the glass and no cages. Great camera!!!
12 months ago @ AmazonTakes great pictures and very good quality video. I was wanting a camera to take good video as well as great pictures. I am very pleased with this camera.
11 months ago @ AmazonBar none this is the best camera I have ever owned. Small, easy to use, yet takes fantastic pictures. Lots of different functionality for the more advanced users, ease of use for the novice.
9 months ago @ AmazonThe manual mode is great. Up to 15 seconds of exposure! That's really amazing for a compact, in my opinion.
11 months ago @ Amazoni just love this camera it takes such beautiful sharp pictures. i cant believe how clear they come out even thou i have the shaky hands. im so glad i bought this one it was worth it.
13 months ago @ AmazonI think this feature is great as it can be displayed in true 16x10 mode on HDTVs. Also, the camera starts up and can take a picture in less than 1 sec so you don't miss any shots. I handily recommend this camera for people who are looking for a compact that delivers great PQ, large LCD screen, lots of manual controls, automatically scene modes, and many more options.
12 months ago @ AmazonI was amazed with all the modes I can choose: portrait, night, aquarium, etc. Now I can finally take night snapshots. I can also configure it manually which I love to do when I have time, so you have all the possibilities in this little camera.
9 months ago @ AmazonVery easy to use, great for getting action shots of the grandkids. Takes excellent scenery photos, crisp, clear and true color.
12 months ago @ AmazonFirst of all, Amazon is great. They've responded quickly to my concerns and have taken care of me well. This is a great camera.
12 months ago @ AmazonNo viewfinder-who cares, who uses one any longer, especially with the gorgeous 3 inch LCD. As far as manual exposure controls, I guarantee you virtually NO ONE who purchases a camera like this cares one whit about that.
9 months ago @ AmazonAll of my past point-and-shoot cameras have been Sony Cyber-Shots. That said, I didn't know exactly what to expect from Canon, though I knew they had a certain standard of quality. I'm extremely pleased with this camera so far.
10 months ago @ AmazonMy family has purchased several Canon digital Elphs (S200, S230, S400, SD700 IS), with the SD870IS being the most recent. We've been very happy so far, and the SD870IS fails to disappoint. It's a fantastic point and shoot, the delay isn't as long as our previous Canon's, the Image Stabilization helps our parents take better pictures.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe optical zoom was more than adequate, and using even more digital zoom is very seemless if desired. I already had most of the pictures we took developed and they turned out great. Even my pictures I took at night with ISO 1600 turned out great.
11 months ago @ AmazonI love the point and shoot, and easy to fit in the pocket type cameras. I had the SD500 since it first came out about 2.5 yrs ago. Loved it, but the SD870IS is definitely a step forward.
12 months ago @ AmazonThis camera was the talk of our Christmas parties this year, as it is just so easy to use. The large display allowed even our old eyes to see if we needed to retake those important shots. This is a must-have camera for point & shoot folks like us!
11 months ago @ AmazonI love this little Canon. The quality of the pictures is great. The screen size is great.
