How it sucks

Had Garmin not cheapened their mount on this series (nice mount, just not a powered one), not gone on a greedy cost-cutting frenzy (no external antenna capability leaves the consumer vulnerable), and if they had added just a couple of important (and basic) features and left out the "fluff", I would have gladly given the 260 a solid 8 (or a 4-star rating). But until Garmin changes their terrible update policies, I don't think I could ever give any Garmin product a 5-star rating. Greed doesn't deserve a star added to it, no matter how good their customer support (or their products) may be.

Shortest puts you on awful back roads. The avoidance choices do not seem to do much. Yesterday it took me via back roads directly to my destination but on the return to "Home" it chose a completely different route that had me in the middle of nowhere when the highway nearby or the reverse of my trip to the destination would have been 1/2 hour faster.

No physical volume control like on the c300 series (yes, most are going the software route, that doesn't make it better), and it has a "tinny" sounding speaker, but certainly loud enough -- cost cutting (you'll quickly see a pattern here). 2. ABC keyboard (tedious, but perhaps qwerty wouldn't fit well on this screen -- too bad Garmin can't come up with a "QuickSpell" equivalent.

Initially I was reluctant about getting one with the Text to Speech function thinking it would be distracting or aggravating to have it talking to me while driving, in fact though it's probably the best feature on the unit. Driving in an unfamiliar city is difficult not to mention dangerous looking at the screen instead of the road but the Speech to Text eliminates those problems. The sound is a little tinny and robotic due to the small speakers but isn't terrible.

The nuvi 200 and the nuvi 260 are not compatible with our 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited or the 2008 Camry. Garmin knows this but does not appear to have posted it on their website or anything like that. I called customer service today (my second call) and the customer service rep acknowledged the problem to me.

The big negative of this unit, which doesn't even have anything really to do with the GPS device, is the horrible manual and Garmin website. If you're not computer savvy or don't understand electronic device very well, you'll miss out on a lot of what this GPS can do for you. If it weren't for the laughably poor Garmin website and the very sparse manual, the Nuvi 260 would have gotten a five star rating.

I like it, but I must admit I was expecting more. My biggest disapointment is about the startup and fix time and then how unbelievably slow the POI database search can sometimes be plus 3-4 out of 10 places are not found. Example: in Houston, there are a few Fry's but after a few mins it found some 300 miles away from me but none close to where I was when there is one just about 5 miles away.

It failed to recognize where I was, and I had to turn the unit completely off twice for it to recognize where I was, then I had to reroute to a different city for it to guide me out of the horrible dirt wilderness where there was no sign of life or civilization. Horrible experience.

I did contact Garmin and they will provide a complimentary copy of thier 2008 map data when available. Route calculation: Another 'troubling' performance issue is the way routes are calculated...at times it is clearly not the best way. It would be great if these devices had a 'learning' mode to allow a user preferred route to be chosen, especially when traveling on streets not yet in the map data.

Although the directions were correct, I would have driven a little out of my way in the wrong direction and made a U-turn had I not known where to turn. So it apparently doesn't recognize traffic light turns into a mall or shopping center, maybe because there's no street name.

Sent it back to Garmin and they sent a refurbished one that was worse than the first. Just got back another one today so we'll see how it goes. BUT - the service support at Garmin is very good.

There were a few glitches such as the system reset itself for no reason after turning off/on the car (lighter), not finding local businesses (I knew they were there and I have latest map), but would try to send me 100 miles away to a Staples store.

This has only happened a few times, however, and we use it a lot.(2) My husband would like a map on the screen which covers a larger area. You can't judge distances or exits that are more than a few miles from where you are traveling. The longer range view skips to a zoom out very quickly which loses the street names and includes only interstates and a general map of the state.

Worst function is the tinny sounding speaker & it can take 2-3 mins to get sattelite sometimes. Routing is typical Garmin logical most of the time. Good poi's but they all seem to leave out poi's that you just assume would be in there.

I was going to buy the AC wall adapter to charge the unit up when it wasn't in the car, but what they don't tell you is that you can just charge up the Nuvi via a USB cable. Just plug it into your computer while you're working, and your Nuvi will be fully charged in a few hours. You'll save yourself the $20 or so in buying that AC wall adapter.

The lack of extras is a good thing, especially if others who might not be tech-savvy will be borrowing or programming it on occassion. Yes, there are some gaps in the POI coverage and it does get confused on occasion with strip malls and shopping centers. And yes, the mounting system could be better.

First, there are not enough options for choosing how the unit picks your route. Fastest or shortest?? Picking fastest (which I have it set on) does not guaranty it will choose a highway route.

Has a nice, rich display, good map layout, fairly bright (although it washes out quickly when tipping it up or down, but good viewing side to side), and a very nice, well-implemented night (dimming) feature on ALL menus (most manufacturers dim their units only at the map level). But it's time-implemented and not light-sensitive. 3.

The only problem so far was that the unit was in Russian language mode when I got it. The instruction booklet was not much help and it was difficult to work through the menus in a different language.

Instead of just loosing the signal, the GPS goes off, and the unit starts telling me to turn etc even while I'm on the right way... I'd prefer if the unit gave some indication of the current accuracy (as the handheld unit does) and refrained from giving directions while the accuracy is below some threshold. - The unit doesn't have a built-in compass (but uses the GPS signal to extrapolate the direction in which you are heading).

How it doesn't

The Garmin Nuvi 260 is worth the slight cost increase over the Nuvi 200 simply for the text-to-speech feature. Aside from the fun you can have playing with the various voices and accents available to give you directions, the real advantage is that it announces the street names, which is invaluable for those of us who can't tell 300 feet from 50 feet when turning and constantly turn a block too soon. The street identification has eliminated "recalculating" the last block or two because my sense of distance is lousy.

(Tip: There is a demo mode where you can enter a destination and simulate a trip, all while standing in the shop.) I didn't need the MP3 player, radio and hands-free kit that some of the more expensive Garmin models provide, and was skeptical about the usefulness of the traffic information feature after reading some reviews. On the other hand, having a model that can pronounce street names (rather than just say "next right") is a good idea because the GPS can't always be accurate, and I want to be able to check the names of the streets I am turning into without having to consult the display.

She has found that the friction mount is easy to hid when she parks her vehicle (and newspaper stories indicate that even the "suction cup ring" on the windshield can lead to a break-in). I highly recommend the Nuvi 260!

And my girlfriend isn't the best with directions so it's even more helpful to her. One of the best uses is navigating my way on a vacation in a foreign town. I couldn't be more happy with the features and the great directions and service it offers.

I exhaustively searched the different GPSes because the price tags were allot more than I wanted to spend, so I had to get it right on the first try. With the Garmin Nuvi 260 I made the right decision, and I am VERY happy. * Ease of use = (now my 6 year old son even programs destinations using the "Find or Spell feature"

I purchased this Garmin nuvi 260 for my wife for Christmas, used it immediately to navigate 700 mile trip and it worked flawlessly. In town and on highway it was accurate, fast, and gave us a very rewarding time with it (POI are great, a must-have!). As everyone else states, you must get the friction mount, it's excellent/hideable/portable between cars.

The price is excellent and it provides great value, especially for those of us who get lost and never stop to ask directions. This means almost every man that I know. I plug in my destinations before I leave for a trip.

He had also gotten directions from mapquest and he said he would have gotten lost without the gps. It took him straight to where he needed to go. I'm so glad I researched this product and everyone's review was very helpful in making my decision to purchase this garmin gps.

I searched and compared products and prices. The price for this was the best anywhere and the product was an excellent choice. He is very happy with this version and well worth the price paid.

Aside from mapping accuracy and great direction finding, it also provides all of the pertinent data regarding your trip (time, distance, etc.) The touch screen controls are very intuitive and easy to use, the windshield mount works easily, and the screen is easy to see and read. I couldn't be more pleased with the Nuvi.

To be honest, I'm amazed at how well it performs. It is fun and easy to use and the Text to Speech feature (speaking the street names, freeway exits, destination names, etc.) is a life saver in heavy traffic where you can't afford to take your eyes off the road. The placement of the on-screen data is very well thought out - the best of any GPS I reviewed.

The lighting is perfect during the day and night time which makes it really easy to see. The volume ranges are excellent, at only 50% you can still hear the directions over the music in the car and people talking. Adjusts quicker to deviation in the route than I have seen other GPS's and of course the text to speech makes it much easier to figure out what street your looking for instead of having to determine where 300 ft actually is.
12 months ago @ Amazon
If you do change your route along the way the device is quick to recalculate your new route. The voice broadcasting street names sometimes struggles with pronunciation, but that is a small irritation and can actually be a little humorous. Over all, I am very pleased with the device and look forward to continued use.

But overall as a package the 260 is very solid. The screen is fantastic, and looks much better in person than online. There are several voice updates avaiable online to expand the TTS options as well.

I just didn't need all those bells and whistles plus I wanted to keep the price within a reasonable budget. I selected the nuvi 260 due to its clear screen and its accuracy.

This was one of the best things I've ever done. It works flawlessly. Some issues, although minor, I've had with the Nuvi are differences in sound volume.

I have my iPod for the car, a wireless earpiece for my phone, and do I really need to look at photos while I'm driving? This device updates routes quickly when you stray off course and has easily accessable Point-of-Interest locater. I think this is an awesome value!

Purchased this for my daughter and it is perfect for her needs. The initial set up was fast and very easy to use. Highly recommend.

Because the 260 doesn't really give you a lot of adjustment choices, one can go through all the options and know everything about this unit in record time.

my husband did some research on the gps systems and this is the one he wanted. It works great and he loves it, I also think ordering it on Amazon is great too.
