How it sucks
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonNot willing to wait until Monday for another botched attempt, so am sending the unit back to Amazon and will wait till mid November for a refund. Meanwhile, I will purchase the item from NewEgg, where I have experienced nothing but outstanding customer service and delivery. Its a shame Amazon can't use FedEx or UPS for reliable and ethical delivery service.
10 months ago @ AmazonI bought the 2008 North America map update from Garmin for my Garmin StreetPilot GPS in August and was never able to install it. I kept getting an error message "The product key you have entered has already been assigned to a different Garmin GPS" The 8-digit "product key code" on the sticker which came with the disc was evidently not enough to unlock the disk. After 5 calls to customer service and 4 emails they finally acknowledge that they sent me the wrong disk - it had been assigned to 3 different unlock codes, so the maps could not be unlocked and loaded onto my GPS.
11 months ago @ AmazonAfter a few weeks it had to be returned to Garmin for repair. At the time I did not know but Garmin sends back a refurbished unit. So I pay for a new unit but now own a refurbished one that I could have probably paid half the price for.
10 months ago @ AmazonEach time I called customer service, I had to wait on hold for 30-45 minutes to speak to a representative only to be told that they need to transfer me to the software division which was another 20-30 minute wait. The tech support in software has no direct line so each call took over 1 hour. When I sent a detailed email message to their customer support, I got an email telling me to call the 800 number.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe first one stopped receiving satalite signals within any acceptable time frame (started taking over 20 minutes to get the signal). The second one started repeatably freezing. With two placed side by side, however, the second could receive signals faster than the first - so that seems to be a defective unit and not a design defect.
10 months ago @ AmazonI started using the darn thing while holding it outside the window, but even that did not work after a while. It was as if the unit was getting "more and more tired." Eventually it stopped tracking all together, so after consulting Garmin support, I did the recommended reset/update. This indeed cured the problem for a few weeks, but once again it is no longer responding.
11 months ago @ AmazonThis would be unaccepable for any other product line (imagine buying a HDTV and after one month having it replaced with a refurbished one). Garmin was not understanding or sympathetic to this inequity (afterall it si their policy - so that makes it OK). So for three months I have had two defective units (Garmin has had them for several weeks as well).
12 months ago @ AmazonWhile my wife was trying to get someone on the phone from the rental company to find out where they were, I was able to find them listed in the Nuvi's database and it took us right there. The controls are fairly intuitive and it took only a few minutes of fiddling with it to gain a good working knowledge. This is a good thing, because the documentation that comes with it is pretty thin, and even the on-line manual (I hate when they do that) is not all that comprehensive.
11 months ago @ AmazonThe Nuvi 350 continued to show my motion on the map with the cursor, but the screen did not show the road. I'm not sure if it was just a temporary glitch, but if I travel that rural road again, I'll be checking the function. Also, it routed me improperly to a rural address when I tested it on that excursion, but I knew that there had not been a bridge for more than 10 years on the route it mapped out for me, so I would have hit a dead end.
10 months ago @ AmazonI have now owned the Nuvi 350 for 7 months and consider it a waste of money, especially when one compares it with the Magellan equivalents. After the 4th month, it started taking longer and longer tracking satellites. At the beginning I was suspecting that this was caused by cloudy skies or maybe too much reflective material on my rental cars' windshields.
12 months ago @ AmazonNavigating in San Francisco is sometimes difficult because "no turn" streets are not taken into consideration, Columbus Ave is an example. In addition, in at least one instance the directtions were flat out wrong. The dashboard mount is totally useless as the unit is difficult to affix to the permanent mount plate and then will fall off even if it felt securely affixed in the first place.
10 months ago @ AmazonMiddle of my trip, it stopped acquiring satellite. had to return the equipment. It may have been an isolated case, but I am not going to buy Nuvi again.
11 months ago @ Amazon-While travelling straight East on a major interstate it directed me to take an exit and get on another interstate that travels North-South, although the route lines on the screen stayed correct (travelling East.) -It could not handle detours due to road construction and even when I drove far away from the route it would just direct me to make a u-Turn and go back. -When I tried to search for certain businesses, it would not display them or only displayed certain franchise locations, even when there were several closer to me (and none of the locations were new!)
11 months ago @ AmazonFoster City Blvd turned out to be the intended exit and it was the last exit before a 10-mile toll bridge, so I ended up having to drive across the bridge, turn around and come back, paying a big toll and losing half an hour plus gas. The street it named was a small linking street, not the main drag. The unit uses a map database, not a street sign database, so you can't trust what it says to coincide with the signs.
11 months ago @ AmazonThe route it generated was seven miles longer than the one I had just used! I find the NUVI to be a stupid and narrow-minded device that has little or no back up in the form of technical assistance. Several times I called Garmin for help and was told that the wait would be over 35 minutes!
13 months ago @ AmazonThe Nuvi is just so basic and slow. Now on to the worst part. Accuracy is very poor sometimes.
10 months ago @ AmazonLately there have been some new streets constructed around my home and they are not listed. In order to add new things to the map I have to wait for Garmin to release a new map set, which is not often (maybe yearly?) and is about $75 last I checked. The maps it has are modern but changes to streets that are made in the last few months aren't up to date in the Nuvi and there is no way to update them.
11 months ago @ AmazonMost of the time I am unable to get the unit to recognize the car's power source, no matter how I adjust the plug in the socket. Sometimes this isn't evident and I leave the unit on while driving and all of a sudden the battery dies because I didn't know I was on battery power. This may be due to some problem with the power sockets, I suppose, but the unit should have a battery that lasts all day anyway.
13 months ago @ AmazonOne road where I live is about 5 years old, and the TomTom did not have it. The directions were so poor that I would have preferred printing directions from Yahoo instead of using this device. I ended up returning the TomTom and getting the Garmin Nuvi 350, and I am much happier.
13 months ago @ AmazonWhile they were working, they worked great and seemed to support most of the positive reviews around here. It gets the three stars for that (average of 5 and 0). I have hopes for the third and expect I was just unfortanate to receive two defective units.
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first9 months ago @ AmazonThe Garmin makes our lives much easier. We can now plan to go somewhere and know that we'll get there in a reasonable amount of time with no problems. It is always accurate, gives precise info ahead of time so we know what to do without confusion.
11 months ago @ AmazonBill asked how I liked Garmin now. Went thru long story of how my son, in charge of aviation assets of Army's Golden Knights, past three years always relied on Garmin all over America, both forming core of nav system and a backup Garmin Portable in his lap just in case- How he navigated over foggy Lake Michigan while CW5 flying right seat would bring the craft perfectly over White Sox Park at son's direction. Told him now I love Garmin, what can I say!
12 months ago @ AmazonMy husband and I purchased this GPS for a road trip several states away and it was well worth the investment! We got there without a hitch! I also travel a great deal for work and the NUVI has been an amazing tool for getting me where I need to go.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe GPS is clear, audible, easy-to-understand, comprehensive... it's just fabulous. The screen is easy to touch and navigate, big enough to see clearly, well-designed -- I absolutely love this thing!!!!
10 months ago @ AmazonFrom the point of view of a person who has little need to be a "power user" of GPS gear, the Garmin has still been an invaluable tool for its core purpose. No longer will my wife and I rely on my own so-called strong direction sense, even in Europe! Indeed, it is easy to use, portable for even hikes, and looking up local businesses in unfamiliar areas has been worth its weight in gold.
12 months ago @ AmazonI love my Garmin Nuvi 350...with a little practice I think I finally have it mastered and now it gets me everywhere I want to go. I even got lost in the mountains once...only unmarked dirt roads.... and the Garmin saved the day.
10 months ago @ AmazonThe nuvi 350 works great. I was considering buying the nuvi 260, but decided on this older model because it allows me to play the voice directions via a cable to my car stereo...much clearer than the tiny speaker in the Garmin.
12 months ago @ AmazonConcerns about small size & lack of features in this price range proved unfounded. This is a great device - very easy to use. In fact, I'd say it's the most intuitively easy to use device I've ever owned.
11 months ago @ AmazonThis is the 3rd nuvi 350 that we have in our family now between my wife, daughter, and myself. We are all very pleased with the unit. It is very easy to operate and is very accurate with its directions.
9 months ago @ AmazonI was a bit skeptical of it's use due to previous ownership of portable GPS units. The Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS is terrific. It is easy to use and very accurate.
11 months ago @ AmazonBut it is great when it comes to its fundamental functions: finds the best route, says the name of the street (eg, Turn Right on Edgell Road), does a recalculation in an instant, easy to use, has day and night mode, has the locations of lots of important places, is light, is sturdy, etc.
11 months ago @ AmazonOkay, I'm a basket case. The Nuvi makes a great crutch. It's small, fits into my computer case easily, and I can program the addresses into it before I leave home.
13 months ago @ AmazonI'm very particular with my toys... and very pleased with the Nuvi 350. It has the new high sensitivity receiver which is much, much better than the Garmin 330 we have in the other car.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe day I received it I had to drive to an area of NH I wasn't too familiar with, so having my Garmin GPS made the drive easy and stress free. The display screen is sharp and clear and the maps are easy to read and follow. The unit has many great features, including estimating your arrival time - it's amazing how accurate it is.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe Nuvi 350 was awarded #2 on Consumer Guide current GPS selection, the number one choice was twice as expensive. This is a great GPS, easy to use, accurate, and plenty of features makes this a winner.
13 months ago @ AmazonAmazon price beats Wal-Mart by about $100, and Amazon always delivers quickly and accurately. If you are looking for a fun, easy and comprehensive car navigator, I highly recommend the Nuvi 350.
12 months ago @ AmazonI love my nuvi 350! I recommend this to all my friends. There is a slight learning curve involved, but I'm learning as I use the nuvi more.
10 months ago @ AmazonIt is very easy to use right out of the box. The images are clear, and the directions accurate. The best part about this model is the voice actually naming the streets.
12 months ago @ AmazonOn a personnel note, I have a slight hearing loss however I find that I have no problem hearing the voice activated driving instructions. At the time I purchased the Nuvi 350 I also bought the Garmin Portable Friction Mount and I'm glad I did. The friction mount allows the Nuvi to be extremely portable just simply unplug and remove.
10 months ago @ AmazonC., Boston, Maine, Rhode Island, Illinois, Texas, upstate NY - and it's been very helpful - re-calculates very fast if you've taken a shortcut that you know, and you can safely take scenery routes, or other small roads. We live in NYC, and sometimes only in Manhattan it has issues b/c of the skyscrapers around, but everywhere else it works great. It's a great help if you're flying somewhere and renting a car - you know you don't need to worry about getting online directions.
