How it sucks
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonRouting to avoid traffic: 1. The unit has taken me miles and minutes off a freeway to return me one exit further right back into the same congestion I left. The lack of traffic info for major streets often means the unit will drop you to surface streets experiencing worse congestion than the freeway you left.
12 months ago @ AmazonAnd the customer non-service is even worse than the product itself. When I called the customer service, their suggestion was to turn the unit on and off. When that didn't work, the know nothing customer service rep said a supervisor would call me back within a week.
11 months ago @ AmazonI plugged it in an nothing happened. Since I stopped using it after 2 months I guess it does not matter much. I am back to my monochrome and beloved Garmin, sure if falls of the windshield when it freezes outside but I can still hear her telling me where to go.
12 months ago @ AmazonAfter trying the product I'm returning it and getting a TomTom or a Garmin. The interface is not clear and it will continously try to find streets only in your city, after you finally get it to recognize the destination you want then it wants to take you around some weird route, not the best one. I'm sure there are ways around it but if I have to spend more time trying to learn the unit quirks than reading a map I get back to the map.
11 months ago @ AmazonIt does get it right most of the time, but the other times it will want to take you 20 minutes out of the way on one of the most basic routes you can enter in. This is completely unacceptable and I know for a fact that tons of emails have been sent to Navigon for support. They will reply that the routing issue will be fixed sometime in January with an update, but I have a feeling that they are going to charge us for the update!
12 months ago @ AmazonFirst the GPS wouldn't release from the dash holder; then on-off switch wouldn't work. Called support both times. They said that they were very busy and would get back to me to let me know what to do with item; but it's been two weeks and have heard nothing yet.
11 months ago @ AmazonRather than going into a prolonged review regarding the items I would like to focus on the issues that make this GPS most annoying. So much so that after having had it for 2 months I stopped using it altogether. Here goes, not in any particular order of annoyance:
12 months ago @ AmazonTherefore, the free traffic subscription was useless to me.... In terms of points of interest...it seems to have all gas stations and restaurants, but was severely lacking retail stores.... Also, the graphic interface is not as user friendly as most Garmin devices or the Magellan that I compared it to....
12 months ago @ AmazonNot acceptable, not at all. Never could get a signal, and tomorrow I am taking it back to the retailer. I would suggest you avoid all Navigon products, if only because of the total lack of customer service.
12 months ago @ AmazonWhile the GPS is fairly snappy the unit is otherwise slow with response to user input and map draws. It is unclear if this is due to software that is not optimized or a slow CPU. If this could be cleared with a software update this score would raise significantly.
11 months ago @ AmazonSo expect something like SLOW TRAFFIC NEAR SIBLEY, but it does not show where or how you will be hitting Sibley nor if it is even on your route. HOW THE HELL do I know if it is common to have traffic on Sibley and how bad is the alternative? Well, I tried the AVOID option and landed in the heart of traffic lights and more cars and got completely jammed up.
11 months ago @ AmazonDilemma that cannot be fixed. Especially not when you drive a Honda. #7) The REAL VIEW feature is only available in what they think are complex situations but frankly when you need it it does not show up.
12 months ago @ AmazonHow does the Navigon 5100 tell you to do the same trip? I'll spare you the gory details, but you will see a lot of stop signs (thereby increasing you knowledge of the local gangs "tags")--be routed the wrong way up a one way street--be told to turn on two streets with incorrect names--be forced to turn on to a street that isn't listed on your turn-by-turn list (the highlight of which is seeing a house with a yard containing more trash in it than the City Dump--really quite remarkable--see it on Google Maps)--and when you rediscover your route you will be asked to make a 540 degree "S" turn across four lanes of traffic and a set of street car tracks.
11 months ago @ Amazon#4) The Traffic Alert feature, main reason why I bought this GPS, if just a pop up list with slow traffic or accident alerts. Here's where it just does not work: - there are so many alerts that it becomes a barrage of messages when you live near a great city
12 months ago @ Amazoni bought this unit because of voice guidance and text to speech and completely disappointed on what i got. Its very hard to hear the speaker while you are on the road driving. the speaker volume is so low (even at the highest point)that you will not be able to hear it correctly while driving.
12 months ago @ AmazonI would suggest lookign at the Garmin units or higher end Magellan units like the 3250 or 4250.. I will be returning my Navigon 5100.
11 months ago @ AmazonAll I can figure is it is a newer revision of software, but not positive. What could be better? Volume could be louder, and it would be nice to simpify the map screen with less information (even with some elements removed it is cluttered on the bottom).
12 months ago @ AmazonThey don't want to accept that there is a problem in this unit even though they know about it very well. - The Directions. The directions are good overall but some time if you are on the highway, the unit thinks that you are on the side road and starts telling you to turn left, right or even take U turn while you are on the highway.
11 months ago @ AmazonIf you are looking for a device that can be everything to everyone this probably not for you (and likely no GPS unit is because it doesn't exist). However, if you are looking for a reaonably priced unit with a number of higher end features that can help you navigate your daily life a bit easier, you will not be disappointed by this device. Navigon 5100 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
12 months ago @ AmazonIn fact, because I frequently see traffic jams in the opposite direction on the freeway, it turns out I've never seen the unit display one of those, either. And then there's the fact that exactly 0% of the displayed/predicted traffic jams I see listed actually exist when I get there. So it's completely useless.
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonI got tired of paying $144 per year for traffic reports and heard about the Navigon 5100 providing FREE traffic reports for life, so I bought one. My big complaint is that I should have bought a Navigon sooner, because not only is the traffic report free (saving $144 per year) but the unit is far easier to use and more accurate. The Navigon is much easier to use and gives far more accurate directions to your destination.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe Navigon 5100 also has a "Route Planner" which allows you to plot multiple destinations - this is great, but I think this could be improved by optimizing the route - meaning tell me where to go 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. Overall, I am more than satisfied and quite pleased with the device.
11 months ago @ AmazonI am a truck driver and now use my wife's old Magellion in my 18 wheeler simply because of the volume factor. My wife loves the Navigon 5100 in her Ford 500.
13 months ago @ AmazonHaving just purchased this for less than $300, and looking forward to a $50 rebate, the net cost of less than $250 makes this hands down the best value on the GPS market today. Though not flawless, the 5100 has more high end features than any other GPS in its price range. Best features:
12 months ago @ AmazonThe default is to first select a POI category and then to filter within that category. I've found it easier to just begin typing within all categories and let the system filter results for you as you type. I haven't had issues with weird routing that other users have identified in reviews as of yet.
11 months ago @ AmazonThe unique "Reality View" sets this unit apart and the free traffic info for life is a big plus. After looking at Garmin Magellan and Mio in stores, this is clearly a great choice. Other great features are the speed alerts on the interstate, your current speed, altitude and day/nite mode.
11 months ago @ AmazonSecond, The signal reception is fantastic! I put this unit, on battery, in the cup holder of my 1995 Merc Grand Marquis, under the dash, with no external antenna and got great reception. I was amazed!
11 months ago @ AmazonTried Tom Tom One but love my Navigon 5100. Text to speech, cool interchange signage, compact size, quick to startup and recalculation...oh, and did I mention FREE LIFETIME TRAFFIC with Zagat reviews? This unit has already saved me it's cost in recalculating my routes around traffic congestion, accidents, construction and more.
11 months ago @ AmazonAfter much studying of features among the top tier of GPS providers, including Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan, I finally decided on the Navigon 5100. I've used a Garmin when I rent cars, and while they have a great POI database, they don't include free lifetime traffic updates like the Navigon does.
13 months ago @ Amazon-Interface easy to use and quick (mapped 440 mile trip in about 12-15 seconds and was the route i usually take) -Re-route quick (if you go off your route) -Window mount sturdy.
11 months ago @ AmazonI bought this device for my wife for christmas and have been happy ever since. The unit looks nice, menus are intuitive and easy to read and the integrated lifetime traffic service is a fantastic feature.
10 months ago @ AmazonThe mount is steady, sticks to the window well, and puts the device easily within sight and reach. The lane assist and real-life view are helpful in unfamiliar settings. Free traffic and construction updates are helpful in big cities as well.
13 months ago @ AmazonI really love Navigon 5100 GPS very much. It helps me with the ramp assistance .........and alot of features. I had experience with alot of other companies .
11 months ago @ AmazonThe Navigon 5100 removes all the mumbo jumbo and takes me exactly to the destination I entered. I love it and am very happy I purchased it.
11 months ago @ AmazonAll of the functions work great as advertised, and it's much easier to use than any other that I've previewed. I use it constantly, in rural, suburban, and city areas and it's street recognition, live traffic, and highway guidance are great! The Zagat points of interest are plentiful, and extremely helpful.
11 months ago @ AmazonSo far I have had my Navigon for a little over a month and am quite pleased with it. The traffic updates surprisingly came in handy, and the points of interests did as well.
12 months ago @ AmazonSo far it always worked great. I love the text-to-speech feature. As it is so clear and nice I rarely look onto the screen.
12 months ago @ Amazon- Accuracy, it gives great directions, and also allows you to block certain roads if you prefer to take another route.
9 months ago @ AmazonTMC works great and allerts me about all the incident which are broadcasted over FM. This is when it is default you can set it to show only alerts ob route.
12 months ago @ AmazonI live in the LA area, so traffic is uttermost importance to me, and the free lifetime traffic sealed the deal to me (unique to navigon, seems like no one else had a free lifetime no-subscription needed traffic update). So far, I have used the unit for a week and here is what I found:
