How it sucks
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first13 months ago @ AmazonThe last time it came back, two of the channels were out when as soon as I connected it. Don't their service centers even check the equipment before they return it? I have now given up on it entirely, since having it "repaired" is a waste of time and money.
9 months ago @ AmazonTried the troubleshooting, stayed on with nothing hooked up, hooked it back up and same thing, protect mode! Figured it was defective. Amazon was great about a return, in fact they mailed me a replacement the same day I sent the old one back.
9 months ago @ AmazonAs I explained to Onkyo, the problem takes hours to appear and disappear and surely no one is going to spend that much time troubleshooting the receiver economically. Onkyo should have offered to exchange the defective one for a new one as I requested. I was also disappointed by the lack of pre amp outputs.
11 months ago @ AmazonThen I decided to look to see what else what out there around the same price and the Yamaha and Onkyo. I found the Denon AVR-688, so I tried that out since I knew Denon was pretty reputable. Both places had a 30 day return policy so I new I had 3 1/2 weeks on left on the Onkyo to do the comparison.
9 months ago @ AmazonThis just seem ridiculous. This still seems wrong to me, but I guess I have to believe the company who made it right? So I'm sending it back and have to formulate another plan...
13 months ago @ AmazonI started having trouble with this thing two months after I bought it. It has since been repaired three times. every time I got it back from service it would work for a few months and then break again.
13 months ago @ AmazonHDMI signal comes into the receiver from your DVD player say ..but you can't split the audio signal out and play it at that point as this unit just passes the whole signal (audio and video) to the TV . So you have 2 choices to get the HDMI audio back to the unit for playback : a) Let the TV split out the audio and send it back to the unit over digital (optical) cable .
11 months ago @ AmazonI will be returning the Onkyo this weekend. I do have not have a vested interest in this article but the difference in sound was worth writing.
9 months ago @ AmazonIt too has problems as it skips and stops. It also drops disks below the turntable. Have not had good luck with my Onkyo or Amazon electronic purchases.
11 months ago @ AmazonWhich I agreed until I tried the Denon. I did all the automatic speaker calibration which worked very well. The sound was ok but not very impressed so I tried tweaking with the sound but did not get much better.
9 months ago @ AmazonOnkyo TX-SR505 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Discovered it had an intermittent video problem. Contacted Onkyo NJ in March to get warranty service. They insisted the unit be sent to a service facility in Syracuse NY.
12 months ago @ AmazonMy only complaint is that it does not have Bass, Mid and Treble dials (it only has bass and treble + or - touch buttons adjustable by 2db increments). It still works very well none-the-less, but I prefer to have slightly better tweaking abilities.
9 months ago @ AmazonBut it does not say they all have to be the same! WTF? I guess since the Bose have a range that starts to low it won't work.?
9 months ago @ AmazonSO I call Onkyo, get some guy from god knows where, I think India and after having been put on hold for a number of times, disconnected from them, calling back and explaining my problem to multiple people, they tell me that this receiver will not work if all the speakers do not have the same impedance!?!?
9 months ago @ AmazonThat means it only outputs a video signal if that is the type it receives. It has no on screen status reporting thus it is very difficult to use in a remote location. Purchased a Onkyo DVD Changer at the same time.
9 months ago @ AmazonI do not have a subwoofer. Hooked it all up and the darn thing kept going into protect mode,as I tried to use the automatic set up mic. It also did it when I did not use the auto set up after about 10 minutes listening to the radio.
13 months ago @ AmazonIf it doesn't work for you for those reasons then the 605 removes those limitations for 200 bucks more (and it's a little taller) .
12 months ago @ AmazonThe instructions should differentiate which surround left/right rear or surround left/right speaker connections to make if one is only doing 5.1. I had surround rears connected with the 3 in front, and the microphone test thought I was missing 2 speakers(it was thinking 7.1). I concluded to connect the surround left/right along with the 3 front...and the microphone test then configured for 5.1
10 months ago @ AmazonThe speaker hookups are a little frustrating but be patient, good thing's take time. For about $550 I have a nice system that will last.
11 months ago @ AmazonThe only reason for the four star rating was there is no remote code to operate my toshiba dvd recorder. So yes another remote.
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonThere are plenty of good receivers on the market, but I truly believe you won't find one that does as good a job for as low a price and if you have a small to medium size "entertainment room" this has more than enough "pure" power (and I am running some high quality rather low efficiency speakers). It sounds amazing and I have not needed to add a subwoofer (my space is small enough).
9 months ago @ AmazonAnyway, my system is set up in a room 15x15 and I have added a simple Sony 100watt sub I recieved from my brother and the quality and clarity of sound far exceeds my expectations!!! My brother commented that this system easily compares to the one he has in his basement with Bose speakers.
10 months ago @ AmazonHad it swapped out and fine-tuned in less than half an hour, tested all the features the first evening, and it's every bit as clean and powerful as my old NAD and offers features I always wished my NAD had. I listen to a lot of music and I love that the Onkyo delivers stereo to my front and rear floor-standing Polks. Has an excellent speaker setup system which worked perfectly on the first try.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe numerous decoding technologies are great. Having the ability to decode for 2.1, 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 is awesome for present and future expandability.
12 months ago @ AmazonWhat a great purchase! The sound quality, audio seperation, ease of set up... all great features.
11 months ago @ AmazonOutstanding for the money my son bought the more expensive model of this receiver,he is a professional musician, and we both agree this model is the best bang for the buck. I have it tied to a 50 inch sanyo high def tv and polk rm20 home theater, love the sound and ease of operation.
13 months ago @ AmazonI have the 5.1 speaker setup (5 speakers and one subwoofer). All of my speakers are Polk Audio in case anyone cares or is curious. Dolby Digital DVD's and high-definition/digital cable stations sound great but what's really cool about this receiver is it has Dolby Pro-Logic IIx.
11 months ago @ AmazonI am very pleased with my new Onkyo receiver. The sound quality when matched with my new Yamaha speakers is very good and the receiver has all the features I need plus it looks great along with the rest of my equipment.
11 months ago @ AmazonLots of I/O, pumps out great sound. The auto setup is nice. It is a good thing auto setup works well though, because there is not a lot of adjustment you can make on your own.
9 months ago @ AmazonBought this reciever to go with Klipsch Quintet II speakers I also purchased on this site. I purchased the reciever for $199.00 and am very pleased.
11 months ago @ AmazonAfter the lengthy set up with the Denon (took me 4 times longer to set up the Denon than the Onkyo), which is not as hard as people say as long as you go step by step through the instruction. I decided to play some music and all I can say is this thing sounds 20% better than my two year old Yamaha and 40% better than the Onkyo.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe selection of different sound selections could be explained in more detail, i.e. best selection for your various inputs rather than just letting the user experiment. Overall highly recommended.
9 months ago @ AmazonColored speaker labels, a multitude of surround sound playback options, multiple digital audio inputs, a well thought-out owner's manual and comprehensive details listed on the web assured me that I made the right choice in making the TX-SR505 my Home Theater President, CEO and Managing Director. Not too many bells and whistles to overwhelm the casual listener, but definitely recommendeded for the serious couch potato. The remote control offers so many expansion capabilities.
10 months ago @ AmazonAfter researching and looking for 2months I decided on the 505[$269 at CC] and hooked them to my new polk rm750 5.1 speaker system. I was a little concerned with the 505 watts per channel. Not to worry.
9 months ago @ AmazonI found the Onkyo very simple to setup and very user friendly. If you are looking for great mid level home theater and music listening experiences at entry level price, then this Onkyo is for you!!! Would easily reccomend this unit to anyone!!!
10 months ago @ AmazonUnless you are an audiophile, I'm sure that you will be quite pleased with this receiver! I know I am!
13 months ago @ AmazonWith this feature, every station on TV sounds great utilizing all 6 speakers. I keep this receiver on all day long and have muted the sound from my television.
10 months ago @ AmazonAnd I don't know what other people are talking about when they mention it runs hot...mine is enclosed in an audio rack and I listen to it extremely loud...and it has never gotten more than slightly warm.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe Onkyo TX-SR505 is an excellent buy! We bought a new house that had pre-wired, flush-mount surround sound speakers in the living room. So we bought this receiver and a $100 Sony Subwoofer.
11 months ago @ AmazonSetup was easy with the auto calibration. Sounds great with my bose surround sound.
