How it sucks

Its loud and crisp enough for watching movies with volume turned up about 2/3 of the way - but if you need to crank up the volume for a party to the max - it sounds weak even at full volume. I wish I had gotten the 805 instead - but didn't fancy the bulkier, larger and heavier 805 besides the issue of 805 getting hot. Onkyo's 100W per channel is not the same as a Harmon Kardon.

i bought this receiver a yr ago & it has already quit working (at the most inconvenient time**, i might ad) it has to be shipped off to houston to be repaired, a real headache. i've replaced it with a pioneer 7.1 receiver. i'm 55 yrs old & i bought a pioneer receiver in 1974, a sony receiver in 1984, & a technics 5.1 receiver in 1998, & they all still work & are being used today.

The price was right, and it seemed like a good deal between the 605, 705 and 805. If I can't figure out the audio sync problems, which could be user error, but so far I have yet to prove that, I'm going to return the unit and spring for the 805, or a yamaha rx series, or Denon.

Turning it up above +3db does nothing, even though the scale goes to +18db. At 0 db it should be VERY loud - even uncomfortable, but the 705 isn't. Turning off Audyssey does help considerably.

Turns out I still have the same problem. Even though there's a dozen inputs in the back, you have to manually assign each of these inputs to one of the 6 or so presets (DVD, Cable, Game, Aux, CD...). Which means that I still have to connect a couple of components directly to the TV, missing out on the surround sound.

My only trouble is that I bought the 705 thinking that I could go from coax input to HDMI input wqhen I finally sprung for the HD cable box. No such luck. The one thing I forgot to check was the coax input on the 705.

One thing I have noticed from personal experimentation with the Onkyo TX-SR705 and Oppo Digital DV-980H (another 5 star product, BTW) is that sending the raw DSD (SACD format) digital signal to the Onkyo sounds better than sending PCM, but _only_ if you disable the Audyssey XT EQ. If you leave it enabled, you get the "overblown" or "hot" sound that other reviewers have complained of.

1) Take advantage of the PS3's PCM Uncompressed Dolby TrueHD-to-PCM, both over-HDMI interface, with HDMI v1.3a compliance (must support xvColor, device control, etc.) 2) Pave the way for native support of Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD/MA a7.1 sound potential, independently of the PS3's native support. 3) Allow us to fully re-use the already phenomenal Z-5500 system, thus having 5.1 or 7.1 RCA pre-outs on the receiver were mandatory in order to use the Z-5500 as the final amplified stage.

Granted, I plan on soon upgrading my tv to a Samsung LCD, sending the signal via HDMI 1.3 through an upconverting DVD player, or Blu-Ray player, I am concerned that the receiver cannot function properly on the lowest possible video and audio connection. The audio sync problem doesn't happen on every movie either.

The volume knob glows blue, but not too brightly. The remote control is a learning remote, meaning you can program your other remotes to work off of it. The manual is not that bad, as some have stated.

However, after connecting via optical cable it sounds FANTASTIC in all modes. Ya baby. 3) But now no music through zone 2...............which sucks.

Conversely, if you feed it the PCM encoded version of the audio, it sounds _better_ with Audyssey XT EQ enabled. Now, I don't really understand why this is the case, as the Onkyo converts DSD to PCM anyway, but this is what I hear consistently (and it's not subtle). I also preferred the sound of CDs (2-channel PCM) with the Audyssey disabled, but I preferred the sound of DVD-Audio, Dolby Digital with the Audyssey enabled.

It rocked! The 705 has a similar remote IR jack which isn't compatible with HR-10 instead it is supported by two other vendors with complex systems and expensive systems.

Set-up is 6hrs-- use the manual to save time. It's amazing how automatic this unit is-- but it must be hooked-up correctly. I can't wait to buy a HD and or Blu-ray DvD player-- My current up-convert is working well with this receiver-- producing at least 720i-- or so the receiver says.

It should not limit the volume of the receiver. The fact that it does is a real minus. If you like your music and movies LOUD, I would not buy this receiver.

The audio trails the video occasionally, and the unit can only delay audio by 40ms, in 5ms increments, it cannot make the audio go past '0ms'. If I could go to +40ms, it might fix things, but so far, no go.

Firmware does not seem to be upgradeable by the end-user (I assume it is the same principle as the 605). For the rest, this is *the* Receiver to have for U. S.

Okay, this is a sophisticted receiver, so it will take a few adjustments to dial in. I have cranked it up and so far the heat topic, at least for my unit, is non existent with room to vent. Also no sinc problem with voice in TV (Dish),DVD or HD DVD (Toshiba).

I have yet to contact Onkyo as reading the other reviews for the set don't get me excited about talking to their customer service department.

Due to styling, I would of liked to get the new 805, but it is such a beast, and wouldn't fit in my space. The main reason for my upgrade was the extra HDMI input (3 Total), as well as the NEW TruHD surround capabilities. From the online documentation, I didn't think you could custom name your inputs like the 805, BUT YOU CAN.

How it doesn't

I can push my Def-Tech's to the limit with little effort. I almost bought the Marantz, I'm glad I didn't. I recommend using the Audyssey MultEQ® XT to set up your room feature.

Using this mode also eliminates the delay in "zone two" which creates annoying echo effect when zone one played within earshot of main room. 2) I stream all music, MP3s and internet radio (radio paradise!) from laptop to my receiver through an Apple airport express. On my previous Onkyo (13 yrs old and now dead) connecting airport express via analog RCA jacks sounded great, not the case with the 705.

It offers a lot of insight, and also talks about the Custom Name bug for the Game/TV input. This may be fixed in a firmware update. Anyway a great receiver, with a lot to offer, and easy to setup.

The unit runs HOT, at variable degrees of temperatures, depending on the degree of features, volume levels, etc. You need to let its on-board fans run efficiently, and let enough space for cooling, above the top grill on its *entire* surface (there are different heat sources and "areas").

I love the late night listening mode. The receiver intelligently lowers the volume of only the loud sounds while the dialogues are nice and clear. All in all this is a great receiver and you will be delighted with the performance.

My set up is is Sony 60 inch TV, Toshiba HD DVD (ya ya I know), and 5.1 speaker system. One note, with Dish and my favorite Sirius channel I can turn off the TV and cruise with music, very cool.

Great to be able to run everything to the tv via HDMI. After running the auto room setup, my speakers sounded better than ever before.

This receiver sounds amazing, hands down. I have a 5.1 setup with new Yamaha 225 series speakers and a 315 subwoofer, and the sound is beautiful.

This receiver was a breeze to setup. I was especially surprised by the upconversion to 1080p for my Wii. It looks awesome!

It took me about 3 1/2 hours to set it up, between cabling and software setup. Sound and picture are great, no complains.

Of course, your mileage may vary, but it's fun to experiment and see what sounds best to you. Since I have alot of CDs and SACDs and listen to them more than I watch movies or TV, I prefer to leave the Audyssey XT EQ off. You can either set the EQ to "Off" or simply select the Pure Direct or Pure Audio listening modes to disable the EQ.

* When watching cable, the sound system for different programs changes all the time, specially during commercials. The receiver has to adjust between Stereo and 5.1, resulting in a brief silence and clicking sound from the receiver constantly switching between systems.

Despite only outputting analog stereo sound, it reproduces or simulates surround sound wonderfully. There are definitely things I'm hearing in films that I haven't heard before.

I really love the sound this thing puts out, and I like having all of my video and audio going through one component.

On-board, variable-speed and almost inaudible fans for extra cooling. 6. VERY USEFUL and powerful remote control, which feels balanced and beefy on your hand.

Couldn't be easier. In any case, this is a great product for anyone who has a disc player that can output advanced audio over the HDMI. Another great thing about the Onkyo/Oppo pairing is that the combination will play the disc even if the display is turned off, so if you just want to listen to music, you don't need to keep your display on.
