How it sucks

That's a serious design and manufacturing defect and don't know if the unit needs to recall for safety reason. I finally returned both unit to Fry's and the sales mentioned that everybody knows this unit generate lots of heat but no one report it burns. The sales also mentioned that Bose won't sell open item to customer and hence they need to return the AM 10 back to the manufacturer directly.

2 of the 3 hdmi inputs were shorted out and this thing wouldn't even recognize that speakers had been hooked up to it. I sent it back. I will take my refund and remain sated with my aging, yet functioning, Pioneer receiver.

One thing I noticed when I hooked it up was the 703 was not as good....but not that bad. The bass didn't have the heft and the treble was not as delicate and detailed but overall I was impressed that it didn't sound "bad". That's when I started thinking a really good receiver might be something to consider.

It worked well for both HDDVD and Bluray, which was why I bought it in the first place. Now, for no reason at all it's stopped working, and no amount of disconnecting, switching of cables, or resetting seems to cure it. I can't get through more than 5 minutes of a movie without the unit shutting itself off if I use HDMI for both audio and video.

If I split the signal so that I use HDMI for video and optical for audio it plays through flawlessly, but that defeats the purpose of having an HDMI receiver that will decode the newer codecs. For what I paid for the receiver I want to work for more than two weeks. It could be that I just have a bad unit (it happens), but this is the second Onkyo HDMI receiver I've been disappointed with (the other being an SR674 I bought last year)so I'm done with them.

What's worse... I called Onkyo and they said that I will have to take it to an authorized service center. I've only had the thing 10 days and they would not even consider swapping it out.

Extremely annoying with HDMI based Blu Ray yet very hard to notice with standard DVDs. Amazon has been slow to refund as well. Looks like customer service has been offshored a bit too far...

Unfortunate that Onkyo failed to fix the video issue that was already in the 605 and 705 in this unit that sells for higher $$. I mean, what good are multiple HDMI connections, if you can't use them satisfactorily?Onkyo finally did so in the unit above the 805 - but you then are knocking on that $2K door and, not being a videophile, I could not justify that expenditure. On hindsight; however, I probably would opt for the 605!

Being a previous owner of cheaply constructed Kenwood, Sony, and Panasonic receivers, my ears were not quite ready for the symphony emanated from this glorious piece of machinery. Do yourself a favor and test drive this receiver at your local A/V store and I promise you won't be disappointed. Configuration of the receiver couldn't be easier and the automatic speaker calibration is spot on (for my use).

There are bad apples in every barrel, but my experience should put to rest the myth that Onkyos are deficient in heat dissipation. I've had one disappointment. I had the vague impression that the 805 would power speakers in two additional zones.

One note; however, I have tried using the receiver as a switch via an S-VIDEO connection and either my TV is too old(10 yr) to handle the 'improved' signal(?) and appears to wash out highlights, or the receiver is deficient in passing the S-VIDEO signal. Whatever the issue, the picture appears much better using the coax to the TV vice routing the signal through the receiver and out the S-VIDEO to the TV. You do need some type of connection from the receiver to the TV in order to use the on-screen menu; so, I lose the on-screen function if I want the better looking pic (or, have to switch back and forth).

However after 2 hours of operation, suddenly I heard a 'poke' sound and smokes came out of the unit when I switched it to play the CD music. It was a bad experience, and I don't know why the unit doesn't have any circuit protection and why it generates the among of heat. I already use the power surge protector for the unit and I don't understand how come switching to CD mode could burnt the unit.

Fry's advised me to buy the warranty in case it is burnt and they will replace a new one for me. I took the advise.

It has 3 HDMI inputs and 1 output. All of which are "repeaters" and do not alter (help or hurt) the digital signal being relayed through. Note the models below this do not do this.

I had the receiver in for about 2 weeks and I had to send it off for repairs. It never upscaled any image up to 1080p or anything close to it. Additionally, the display didnt work property.

beware; only the TX-SR875 has the upconversion feature. I learned this after reading the user manual that came with the TX-SR805.

Not alot of movies are in 7.1 sound yet, but it will come and when it does, this system will not be outdated. Setting it up was a breeze with the microphone.

That was not a issue for me but it will make the theater usage much simpler for my wife and dad. I do not have any heating issues at all. The receiver has 7" of open space on the top and the back of the entertainent system is also open.

It is big and heavy and does get warm, but for a top performing receiver that is to be expected. I'd buy it again... It does what Onkyo says it will do.

If you are using the remote no big deal, but if you walk up to the unit to select a component, unless you have a light shinning directing on the face it is hard to see. Would be nice to be back-lit. For the $1500 I saved by not buying the Denon I will live with it.

How it doesn't

It has THX certification, which I loved very much, and devides the sound into 7 speakers very clearly. Each time I insert different DVd or blue-ray disc, it automatically indicates the best sound option which I love too. Above all, comparing to my previous two Yamaha home theater receiver, this one is the best.

After months of pining over the higher tier Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, and Pioneer receivers, I finally weighed all the pros and cons, listened to them simultaneously in our favorite A/V super marts, and went with the Onkyo for sheer features and performance for such a low price point. For those of you who have done your research on this receiver, you have probably heard the problems relating to A/V lip sync issues. I am pleased to report that all HD content, cable television, video games, HTPC movies, etc.

The configuration is pretty easy to understand and the ability to assign inputs is great. The unit sounds awesome playing blue ray movies and games.

Even my novice wife (who had questions about my decision to buy the receiver) also acknowledged the audio looks superb - worth the price. Apart from the audio now I have one HDMi cable running to my projector (still have the component there) and I can switch the inputs to the receiver without switching the projector input.

I don't think it can be beat for the price. How the sound/video quality stacks up against the competition, Denon, etc, I can't really say yet, but in reality I'm just so thrilled I can now conveniently switch between components seamlessly - and work! Seems as if there's differences in opinion regarding the heating issue.....for me it DEFINATELY gets hot, with 'routine' use, much hotter than my other Denon.

The TX-SR805 we purchased with the primary focus of THX certification and zoned outputs arrived sooner than expected, and free shipping. The set up did require reading the instruction manual, but th remote control functions slipped seamlessly into our existing component lash-up. The addition of this unit with the satellite receiver dual Digital Video Recorder and wide screen made the High Definition content even more brilliant.

I discovered the alarmingly warm Onkyo just before I went to bed. It had been on for three hours covered by a towel yet still functioned perfectly!

This can be adjusted under the speaker settings menu. It's a great buy for a tight budget audiophile. I'm running Paradigm Reference series speakers for my fronts and center, B&W's for my surrounds and a 10" Velodyne sub.

Brand spanking new and it blows up right in front of me !!!!!! I had a fireworks show in my living room.

Did the Speaker setup and it was great and easy. I saw terminator 2 (blu ray) on PS3 and it was just fabulous. I had Yamaha Rx-V2400 earlier and I thought that was amazing.

after getting it home i found myself even more impressed than i had hoped. i'm fussy about my gear and the 805 exceeded my expectations with the physical quality of the component as well as the the superb sound.

For beginners, the amount of "Bells and Whistles" may seem staggering to learn about and actually use, but this unit breaks the functions down logically and with step by step instructions. A newbie will find this receiver powerful (130 true watts/channel), relatively easy to set up (learning curve for specific tweaks take more time), and diverse enough to exceed your audio needs (2 channel stereo, 5.1, 7.1, multiroom, etc.). For the Intermediate user, which I include myself in, the receiver meets all needs.

Mine doesn't even get hot and is running 7 120w 6 ohms speakers, plus 250w sub. Here is the link in case you care to know what speakers I'm using.

You have to wonder if this feature is worth the additional cost of $400+ over the TX-SR805? Overall I think the Onkyo TX-SR805 may be the best home theater receiver on the market today.

I ended up putting this at the very top of my audio rack to prevent any heat problem (so far so good).

The V30 works so great with much less heat, easy connect & setup, compact in size, fast switching modes. I got back all the 1080p signals!

Even my old rear and subwoofer sound very good with this receiver. Stereo sound with just the two Beta 50s sounds incredible. HDMI switching is great.

The Onkyo is a substantial receiver with excellent features. The amps and the Audyssey setup is accurate and easy. So what is the hitch?

So keep this in mind, great price (Unbeatable price) yet headaches in your future unless somehow Onkyo

I am presently painting the room in which my home theater equipment is located. I chose to cover rather than to remove my gear. The Onkyo was cloaked in a beach towel.
