How it sucks

I'm not sure what "generation" it is but it clearly did not work in the Philips player after numerous attempts. I will agree that the picture when playing a regular DVD was just ok and not great but I was willing to overlook that for the Ipod feature. Unfortunetly I couldn't even get that far with this product, I'm not sure if my Ipod is not compatible or if the switch toggle that connects the Ipod to the unit was defective but I sure wasn't going to buy one and bring it home to find out the hard way.

NOWHERE on the box or in the documentation does Phillips make that clear, in fact the unit is stammped "insert 60 and 80 GB I-Pod here". We bought the new 80GB Classic and when we connect it to the player, we could not get the video to work on the DVD player. Initially when we called Phillips they said it would work, but after getting passed to a supervisor they admited that it ONLY works with the old 5th generation I-Pods, and they are aware that they do not state that ANYWERE on the packaging or documentaion, nor did they seem to care.

After making sure I went through the setup list TWICE I broke down and called Phillips. Come to find out, this machine is not compatatble with the newer Ipods because according to the tech support lady, Apple has locked the compatibality communication on the new Ipods and they do not "communicate" with this product. There is nothing to do except put it in the box and send it back.

There is a way to make the iPod Classic 160 gb work with the Philips line of Portable DVDs with iPod docking but its awkward and requires the purchase of Apple's Composite AV Cable ($50). Apple installed in the 6th generation iPods what amounts to an electronic lock. When you set the player up to send out video externally it will ask you to "Please Connect Video Accessory".

I went to Best Buy to check this item out and could only get Audio out of my Ipod, it would not transfer the picture to the screen. 2 Best Buy Reps looked at it and neither one had a clue what the problem was. I tried installing it, uninstalling it a few times and couldn't get the video to work, and I made sure all the Ipod settings were correct.

As i said before, this is an awkward work around and should you go back to the main menu to select a different movie you will have to perform these steps again. For those of you (like me) who were stuck with one of these units, this work around just might make you feel a little better about your purchase.

Also, it was disappointing to find no earphones in the package for a quick check of the sound quality. Another trip to the store to buy earphones? This machine does have its good points, too: the sound and picture qualities are good enough, and apparently the iPod docking feature is important to many.

The remote does not stay very secure in the unit when it is stored. We never got to try it with the iPod, but since it won't even hold the remote in place, I would be nervous docking my iPod in the unit.

I hope you don't need service after the warranty because there is non. If you need service during the warranty they give you a new one, once the warranty is over buy a new one. They have NO parts for their portable DVD players, not even the drive.

So, when watching a standard 1.85:1 aspect movie on this 16:9 screen, you either accept the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen OR use a 2x zoom that cuts off much more of the picture than needed. It doesn't support zooming just enough to fill the screen (like most TVs do). Third, it only supports certain resolutions of divx files, but doesn't tell you which ones are supported.

First, contrary to the comments by another reviewer, it does NOT support SDHC. I was able to play divx files using a 4GB Transend 150x card, but my A-Data 4GB Class 6 card isn't recognized by the device. I contacted Philips and they confirmed SDHC cards are NOT supported.

The only disappointment so far is the fact that this player won't support SDHC cards. Pretty much anything over 4gbs isn't useable.

It is a very good machine but won't play vidio with the 80/160 GB Ipod which is not stated. It does play vidio on the old style 30/40 GB Ipod. When I called there HELP line they were not very helpful .

After less than two weeks of use, the video display started to deteriorate so that it was impossible to use at all. The unit is small, so if that is what you want, go for it. The construction leaves a little to be desired.

I wish this was comparable. If Philips was able to put a sharper and clearer screen on this device, I'd be willing to pay $100 more for it. With the screen they went with, it's not even worth 2/3 of the price I paid.

Besides, I liked the way it looked. Then I got it home, and found some things wrong with it--enough to return it. Here they are:

I've been reading on line about aspect ratios, but this manual offers nothing on it in reference to this DVD player. 2. And that brings us to the instruction "manual." I find it totally confusing: it is one huge page, folded about 65 times, and it is very hard to follow, with other languages economically crammed into it.
13 months ago @ Amazon
It just gives you an error: "Unsupported Resolution". The native resolution of the LCD is 480x234. I found a couple of resolutions that worked, but I forget what they are (sorry).

It's like a puzzle, and who has time for puzzles when one is trying to learn HOW TO MAKE THE PICTURE FILL THE WHOLE SCREEN? 3. I found the on/off switch to be annoyingly small--my finger could not toggle it hard enough to make it work, and sliding it with my fingernail made the nail break.

While this player will play my IPOD video 30 GB...it does NOT play IPOD 160 GB Classic models. I even took this player to the Apple Store and they confirmed that it can't be played in this deck.

It's so awesome. I can see all of my movies from my ipod on the 8.5 inch screen! ...and the resolution stays great too!

I had other portable dvd players in the past, but this one beats them all! I like to travel on road trips alot... and I have a big one coming up, so this will be so handy and fun to have!

So far it's been a wonderful player. We love the swivel screen (something we didn't know about before hand) that turns this player into a tablet style portable DVD player. We also love the fact that we can play videos on the iPod, DVD or an SD card.

(Amazon did not have another replacement for the refurb.) I got a steal on the price (refurb) & after paying a small shipping price to Phillips I'm still making out great! Love all the options.

I have a 5th generation 60 GB ipod, and it plays great in the Philips player. It is small enough to travel well, but the display is great viewing for two or three people. If you have an older ipod, and require a larger viewing screen for the movies, I recommend this player.

WE COULD'VE PURCHASED A DVD PLAYER WITH A LARGER SCREEN , FOR MUCH CHEAPER PRICE, IF WE ONLY KNEW !!!! PHILLIPS IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBALITY FOR THEIR MISTAKE !!!!!!!!! DO NOT BUY !!!!!!!!
