How it sucks

It looks as cheap as it is, doesn't play all DVD's and the remote NEVER worked. we called the 800# provided by Amazon and were told the warranty doesn't cover the remote, so we had to purchase a new one for $20.04 which was not in stock and we were told it will take 3 to 4 weeks for delivery.

I've gone through 4 DVD players in the past few years because they get left on by accident and once the movie is over and goes back to the menu, the motor continues to spin the disc, the laser continues to read the disc and one of the two burn out or start to wear out and suddenly your movies start skipping or freezing. No problem with the Phillips unit. If its not playing the movie it will go into standby mode after 15 minutes.

The Philips DVP3960 failed to playing my DVD+ burned media (TDK), displaying the message "NO DISC". Also, a few of my older commercial DVDs would not play. (4) Small unit has a somewhat cheap feel.

After researching further I decided to return this DVD player and get a Philips 5982 instead, even though I do not need 1080p.

were are you going to find a Dvd player with hdmi out for that kind of money. The first time we played it there was some play problems but a quick cleaning with laser disk cleaner and good to go. I had read were one person said that you could only turn on/off was with the remote.

This one fit the bill, and is a nice little player too. The only thing it is missing is a front panel USB port to play movie files directly from a memory stick. Philips makes players that have that, but they were too wide for me.

Good value for the money. I do not like the remote of this unit, besides that it is a good buy.

Also you can go to the philips site for other info. The reason you cannot have a multi-region player off the shelf is because it is technically "illegal". DVD disks are released at different times for different regions--- disk makers made it "illegal".

I had mixed results with the Philips DVP3960 which I owned for about one week and then returned to Walmart.

You loose upconvertion this way. It also took a good while to figure this out, thus the 3 star rating. I would recommend the player, but know this going in.

What more could you ask for from a company that had its hand in the cookie jar before the cookies were even invented? Well, how about mp3 support, jpg support and DIVX support?

This shuts the laser and motor off, but keeps the last saved position (if you paused the movie for an extended period for example).

It might not be as good as the high end SD & HD players but they are many times more expensive. So for $40 buy this player to hold you over while the HD/Blue Ray war plays out and they become reasonably priced. BTW: don't pay $30 for an HDMI cable, I found one on Amazon for $6 (including shipping) and it's just as good.

I bought this unit about 6 weeks ago on whim one day because I really wanted a DVD player that would support DivX and I wanted it fast.

I highly recomend this product. It plays most types of media and is an asset to any lover of entertainment

Thats where this hot little DVD player shines! You know all those *wink* DIVX movies you've got on your hard drive? How about putting 6 of em on one DVD and being able to pop that into the Phillips DVD Player and just choose a movie from the menu?

I can put 4 movies on one DVD and all play well on this Philips 3960/37 unit. No decoding/compression needed by other programs. Quality of the DivX movies are excellent.

No problems so far - bought 2. Make sure to buy component or hdmi cable if you have those connectors on your tv. Comes with rca type cable which doesn't give the best picture.

I get a great picture with my LCD tv. I see a difference from choosing 480p vs 720p. Very close to HD quality in my opinion.

and heres what i can say about it. I payed under 40.00 with free shipping.

I was looking for a player that could upconvert to 1080i and play PAL DVDs, and decided to buy this one. I have many 4:3 pan and scan DVDs, and discovered this player could only upconvert at a 16:9 ratio, stretching the picture. My Sharp HDTV can't resize the aspect ratio of HD content, and the only way to play 4:3 DVDs in their original aspect ratio is to output the signal at 480p, defeating the purpose of having an upconverting player (which also downconverts the picture of PAL DVDs formated at 576p).

Absolutely no problems and I love the region free functionality together with auto screen sizing.

It has a nice feature mix, it's simple to operate, and it truly does justice to my high quality DivX video files.

I bought it for the width, however -- if you check the dimensions you'll see that the width is much less than the standard 17 or 18 inch wide component.

That player, through its pillar box feature, can upconvert 4:3 DVDs without stretching the picture and can also be made region free. If you do not plan on upconverting 4:3 DVDs, or your TV can resize a 19:9 signal to be 4:3, this is a great player.

Easy to convert to Multi-regional (using the directions another reviewer wrote). Definitely highly recommend this player to anyone wanting HD for least amount possible.

Not happy!

This player plays everything, and can be easily made region-free with a few button pushes (do a quick google search and you'll find them).
