How it sucks

philips sent a replacement and it was more of the same (snow). technical assistance instructed on how to download upgrade software and the entire unit died. nothing but lights on the display.

I have a multi unit system and had problems with the video since the signal is weaker. I had to use an alternative hookup to get the unit to work. Even customer support could not help, BUT made a valiant effort.

The remote is a little sparse no open button. If it is off the door will refuse to open if you press the open button on DVD player. My only complaint is the button for opening a closing it.

I think for anyone that has a bunch of old DVD, they should get one of these to watch them all. I still plan on getting a real HD player, just to see the difference in watching a movie on this unit, and watching the same movie in true HD format. But I would give this unit at least 4 stars, maybe 5

This is annoying when trying to watch dvd's designed for 4:3 screens, as you have to manually scale the resolution down to 480p to keep it from stretching the video out of proportion. At the very least it should scale the video feed to 4:3 before sending it to the tv in this mode, so it doesn't get stretched.

I've looked through every option on the TV and DVD player...nothing fixes it. The picture is great otherwise, at least. Also, it's unclear in the description, but this DVD player only supports HD-upscaling using HDMI, not component cables.

There's a red line that goes through the screen when using this DVD player - it is pretty bad, and I wouldn't recommend getting it. Its difficult to pay attention to the movies when you see this red line going through the screen...

However, this unit surely lacks of certain useful functions: (1) It does not have play resumption. Once the "stop" button is pressed, the player returns to the beginning of the disk;

This DVD player is a little sluggish, a little tricky to operate, and requires the remote (which is not very sensitive) in order to access some of the basic features.

Not only does this unit upscale our DVD's but hook up a hard-drive, flash drive or other usb storage and watch films, look at photos and have fun. Too bad it is only USB 1.1 though.

It should at least be an option. 2) This is the biggest one. The auto setting for hd is horrible.

(3) I have players in three different rooms and I have a habit to turn off the player completely for energy conservation, even though it means very little. This unit only allows "play" and "standby" unless it is unplugged. For the price and the easiness of setting to all region operation, it is a worthy buy!

- Very slow in loading up disk. - Remote is weak. Can take a number of button presses to get command.

The DVDs that I rented, even though they were not HD DVDs, did indeed seem to have a sharper and more HD like picture and it covered my entire HD screen. On my old DVD player the picture was much smaller than my HD screen which was frustrating.

This was my second unit and Amazon was VERY prompt in getting it to me.. Other concerns, the remote is very flimsy and does not have a strong signal. You MUST point it at the unit to get it to function.

Don't expect a pretty menu and BE PATIENT as this unit takes time to turn on and go through it's paces.. OK so why the 3 stars with all of these problems. The unit does do what it supposed to do.

The player do all the jobs I want. However USB transfer really slow and sometimes do not slide to next picture. Other than that, it is OK machine with the price.

philips should abandon its dvd player buisness and stick to something simpler... light bulbs!!!!!!

My only complaint is it is a little slow rendering JPEG files but this thing is not a computer so what can you expect.
12 months ago @ Amazon
Anyhow it's a little slow getting started and you have to turn it on before you can open it up (i.e. pushin open won't turn on DVD player) So far its played just about every format. Having used the USB, but looking forward to it

I am absolutely happy about what I got for 60 bucks. The HDMI upscaling is the best, I can totally see how much it makes a difference in picture quality. Plus this little buddy can play almost everything, avi, wmv, you name.

This Philps DVP5960 DVD Player wih HDMI, 1080i, upscaling, xvid, dvd, divx-player is inexpensive and allows you to enjoy your technology while the giants play monopoly and decide what's best for us. Wait a year, the technology will change, along with the price and then put your system together. Meanwhile enjoy your DVD's at 1080i HDMI, for the price of your favorite DVD.

Watched Pirates of the Caribbean III and saw colors and details that were simply amazing. Definitely need to play with the setup to get the best picture. Menu definitely bites compared to others.

That having been said, most people probably won't notice the subtle difference in quality between using the hdmi cable and upconverting to 1080i and using the component cables and only going to 480p. The few minor issues I can live with:

We bought a 37" 720p set last year and decided to get this in the interim. Wow, what a difference over the standard DVD player we had hooked up. Looks great with included component video cables.

Dvd player works great! Looks good the upscaling works good, and I love the USB option.

Upscaling works great, and through HDMI, even 700 mb DivX movies look great. The ability to play DivX files is invaluable, and the USB feature says great.

The player arrived quickly and was easy to set up. It plays beautifully, and it is easy to show pictures on the TV or play music using the USB port.

I needed one that could play all my home-grown backups and conversions of things I've gotten off the Internet. This thing plays anything I've burned myself flawlessly.

This was a Christmas present for my partner and she absolutely loves it! The picture is phenominal and it's a great price for a great product. I would reccomend this HD DVD player to anyone.

I use the HDMI to connect to my 42" flat screen and just love the picture it gives. You have to experment with the HD 720 and 1080 modes to see which gives the best play back. Using the digital connection and 720p woorks best for most of my movies.

It has a great upscaling picture.

This DVD player has great picture quality, but it can't upconvert using component video. I know everyone says HDMI is better picture quality, but I disagree.

DVD player works great. Only complaints: 1.

For the price this is a great DVD player.
