don't buy this, i did and it stopped working i could not return it to amazon,so i sent it back to samsung that was jan i still have yet to recieve a new one i have called a number of times first to have it repaired,after waiting for parts over a month i requested it be replaced that was in feb i called again after another month and was told i needed to be approved for the replacement and it takes a month. i am very unhappy not with amazon but with samsung

After less then 2 weeks of use we found my self-sending the player back to Samsung on a warranty repair. Our Netflix disc was (is) locked in the player with non-responsiveness to manual resets, simple open/close, and on/off functions. Samsung was going to make me pay to ship it back to them until we made such a fuss they said, "Well for you we will this time".

Once it started playing the picture was very nice (about as nice as my 1080i HD DVD player), but the utter lack of features, slowness and the fact that it is already obsolete by newer profile 1.1 players makes product another real lemon. And no, you can't make lemonade with this, so don't waste your money. If it goes under $50, pick one up, but until it does stay far, far away.

However after recent learning about Profiles 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 I decided to return it and cancel. Unfortunately this player does not support the newer profiles coming out soon, thus it's really a waste to buy this old archaic hardware that won't play interactive features like PiP. 1.1 is Picture in Picture, a second video player.

unit died, no power, couldnt get dvd out of unit before sending back to amazon. called samsung, got somebody in india wonted to service unit, told them hell no i was sending it back to amazon.

Also, the unit would not connect to the internet via the Ethernet port. When I contacted Samsung, the customer service representative claimed that the Ethernet port was not for connecting to the internet, but for connecting to a computer (huh?!?). He was not phased when I pointed out that the manual (yes, I actually did read the manual) clearly states how to hook the unit to the INTERNET via the Ethernet port.

So unfortunately, if you do not have any of these programs then you have to purchase them or you're out of luck! The second issue I found when trying to update the firmware is that, the firmware has to be burned onto a CD-R or CD-RW. The player does not seem to recognize the information if it is in DVD-R or DVD-RW format.

We bought one, had to upgrade it to see 'Rise of the silver surfer' and it broke. So right now we have a player that has a Blu-Ray disc stuck in it and the only thing it ever does is greeting us with 'Hello' on its display when powering on and saying 'goodbye' when powering off. We tried to got support but unfortunately all they said is, that it is all our fault.

I'll probably return this device and wait for the studios to come to their senses or else wait for the quality on Blu-ray devices to come way, way up. Frankly the decision by the studios seems so illogical that I have to assume that there is some fairly crooked back-room dealing going on. Why else would they go with a format where the playback devices all have problems, the playback devices are more expensive, the format is still in flux, the discs are more expensive to manufacture, and the discs are more easily damaged (i.e., good luck getting a playable disc from Netflix)?

On the Samsung I purchased this process seemed noisy at first and got progressively worse to the point that I can no longer play BLU-RAY disc on my player. I called customer support and was told that they have no replacement program.

At current count there are at least a dozen major movie titles that simply will not play, with another dozen or so requiring workarounds or have other issues that detract from the experience. Myself and many others have been calling Samsung on a weekly basis for the past four months about this, despite their continued claims to not knowing about the issues. My suggestion is to stay away from Samsung blu-ray players entirely, and if you are wantinga blu-ray player that you will never have problems with and is extremely fast to load titles, get a PS3, even if you arent intending to use it for games, it is still THE least expensive, fastest, most compatible, and most upgradeable blu-ray player out there.

The BLU-RAY player had firmware issues out of the box and downloading updates was by no means a simple project, their customer support even recommended that they send a disc since they had so many problems with downloads. I got through the download process with no real help from Samsung. But that was only the start of my realization that Samsung support is a complete joke.

I've owned a Samsung Blu Ray player for 8 months. Their player does not support many of the newer DVD's released in the latter part of 2007 and early 2008, including Pirates of the Carribean 3. We've been waiting since October (3 months) for a new firmware update, but it hasn't been posted.

Many new movies, especially those that use the BD+ copy protection, or heavily use java menus simply do not like to play on this player because the manufacturer (Samsung) can't seem to be bothered to release firmware updates for its players, and is currently the defendant of a class-action lawsuit for this very reason. Starting about October 2007, more and more movies started being released that this player simply WOULD NOT PLAY. While most other Blu-ray player manufacturers released updates to resolve the issues within 3 days or so, some even releasing the necessary updates a day or two before the titles in question were even released.

The new disc had the same problem, though, which told me that this was a player bug. Since the movie had been out for a day, I found a couple posts of other people having problems including one that got a confirmation from Samsung support. I called support, who eventually told me that the version 1.2 firmware on the website would fix the issue (hint, you need to know exactly what to ask and be persistent since this person would have sent me away with false information if I hadn't kept clarifying her responses).

A few purchasers of this fine Blu-Ray player have been in a hurry to return or exchange it for other models because of some incompatabilities with newer Java-based titles such as RATATOUILLE, DIE HARD 4 or CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. These discs now play well after updating the player's firmware. Every Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player is going to run into this problem (and solution) as the technology matures.

No matter what movie I played, whether it was bitstream, PCM, DTS-HD or just Dolby D, I started having HDMI handshake issues about 15-20mins into a movie. At this point I started questioning my receiver and my tv but since this unit was only 2 days old, I sent it back for a refund and bought the Panasonic DMP-BD30 and could be happier. No more HDMI issues and it plays every movie like it should.

I stopped the movie (and powered-off the player) after about 1 hour to go to a Christmas dinner. When I came back, I tried to turn on the player, and nothing happened!!! The player was not responding to any command and I couldn't even EJECT THE DISK THAT WAS RENTED FROM BLOCKBUSTER.

Still no luck. Still clinging to a tiny shred of hope that (a) the "version 1.2" might actually fix the problem, and (b) the version 1.2 might have been posted to the web that day after I did my upgrade in the morning - a day after a major blockbuster movie that required it was released nationwide, but who's counting - I tried the painful online update process again. Lo and behold, a new update was available that might be version 1.2 (?) I went through the update, and the movie worked!

Halfway through, it reset the movie, opened and closed the tray, and started the movie back from the beginning. It was then slow to respond to any commands but eventually I was able to get back to where the movie left off. I finished the movie but quickly found that I couldn't stop it.

2) I will be charged for the disk that got stuck inside the player (notice that I couln't even watch how the movie ended!!!) 3) I will need to pay the rent of two movies that I couln't watch 4) I bought an expensive Monster HDMI cable, which is now useless, until I receive the replacement of my Blu-Ray player.

However, this player does not support bitstreaming of Dolby True-HD or DTS-MA audio tracks to your receiver, simply reverting to the core dolby digital or dts tracks, providing the same audio experience you would hear on a DVD, but not the superior sound Blu-ray is capable of. This player is also very slow to load movies and very slow to respond to eject requests, even when the tray is empty. However.

Only the HD-A35 and the XA2 can do that, but both are significantly costlier than this player. The BD-P1400 can also output full 1080p/24 video, while the A3 can only send out 1080i and does not support 24fps output. Both are slow to load up, but the A3 is significantly slower, taking almost 2 full minutes to warm up the player and display video on your monitor/screen.

I ran into this with the new Live Free or Die Hard DVD, which after the usual 45 second or so load process simply hung the player. It wouldn't respond to any input (play, stop, menu, etc), the counter read "0000", and the screen remained black. I had heard about the DRM format issue, so suspected that this could be the potential problem - unfortunately I had bought that DVD on its first day of release and tried to play it that night so no one else had posted about their problems with that config yet.

Yesterday it suddenly stopped loading Blu-Ray discs all togerther. DVD discs load and play. I've searched the web, especially the excellent bluray.com website, and have noticed that most Blu-ray players have problems, but Samsung stands out for poor support.

It comes with version 1.1, you must upgrade to 1.2 for better sound and solves problems of some dvd's not playing. Either burn a CD-R, download from the internet, or call Samsung customer service to send you a CD with the upgrade on it. All my DVD's play just fine, it takes a few seconds to load, but that is OK.

No update as I am waiting for the next one which is supposed to be less problematic than the previous two. So it's just as it came. All SD dvds have played fine, a few stopped mid movie and I had to hit play, but that was all.

Interestingly, there was no obvious way to relate the "version 1.2" available on the website with the version I had upgraded to online that morning (the online version uses a long date code instead of a version number). With nothing to lose, I went ahead and tried using a CD-RW using the instructions posted on the web. No luck, the player didn't recognize it as a firmware update.

My 1st Sammy 1400 was delivered with the 1.2 version of firmware and all seemed well until I tried to play Pirates 3 and it just hung on the menus. Corpse Bride also would not play. Samsung indicated that "some" 1400s were having issues and a firmware update would be coming shortly.

I'll probably return this device and wait for the studios to come to their senses or else wait for the quality on Blu-ray devices to come way, way up. I'm hoping that Samsung will have this issue fixed fairly soon. It's only happened on two discs ("Ghostrider" and "Star Trek: The Original Series" when I wanted to watch the non-HD-DVD side of the disc on this player)so far but it is annoying. It's not an isolated problem related just to the 1400 as it has happened with other players (and HD-DVD players as well)but it wasn't a problem that I ever experienced with a DVD player.

the player does not support all DVD formats, for example I can't play it on DVD+ discs that I could play on my 5-year old Sony DVD player; 2. the Blu-Ray discs are highly sensitive to even insignificant scratches or finger prints; out of the 10 Blu-Ray discs I rented so far from Blockbuster during these 6 weeks, 3 of them they refused to play altogether and none of the discs played smoothly until the end.

I received the Samsung BD-P1400, and have had nothing but problems right out of the box. I was surprised as I have had GREAT luck with other Samsung products. The problems are 1) With some discs, it goes through the startup, and won't open the movie 2) It goes through the previews, and then goes to black screen 3) Attempts to hit Disc Menu, cause the unit to go to black screen, and 4) Hit the Eject Button, and it takes FOREVER for it to respond.

Unlike HD DVD, Blu-ray is constantly changing and this player in about 3 or 4 months will be obsolete and unable to play any special features, and even some discs! If you are going to buy a Blu-ray player get one that is 1.1 compliant or not at all. Thankfully HD DVD is standardized and this is not an issue with them.

Finally I decided to return this player because also it seems to be an obselete model that will not be able to read future Blu-ray discs. Beware, this player is sluggish, unfinished and obselete product. It's a no go even as an upscaler player.

I don't think this is the worst Blu-ray/DVD player, but I have experienced inexcusable problems during playback in which a player of this price range just shouldn't have. Every five to ten minutes, the frame rate would unexpectedly slow down for a second or two, causing the video to become very jittery. It also had a really hard time playing back a slightly scratched Blu-ray disc from Netflix.

The only complaint I would have, and it is VERY MINOR, is that it is really slow in booting up. I sometimes feel like I've waited two minutes for the menu to come on after putting in a Blue-Ray. Maybe that is normal and I shouldn't hold it against the machine, but it certainly isn't what I am used to from DVD technology, all the way back to draft one.

There seems to be no way to resume playing a disc from where it was stopped. Nice picture but very slow to carry out just about every action. Not very intuitive.

They took the product back on the slow train to NJ and it has been 8 days already with out our new player. We only hope whenever we receive the player back it changes our viewpoint on our purchase. At this point we are unimpressed.

In the morning, the machine was off but it when I powered it up I learned that it had not completed the upgrade. In retrospect I believe this is what happened: the download eventually completed, it put up a "do you want to upgrade your firmware" dialog box, and after a couple minutes of inactivity it timed out and eventually turned off. Nice design, their engineers clearly did not try this in their homes.

back to the store. The third unit worked well from the start. I did the firmware upgrade and it stopped working (no video from HDMI or SVideo).

I imagine it will never get better, likely probably worse over time since these are in essence computers, and the more technology advances the slower these machines are to turn on and load up. After doing the firmware upgrade, I checked my settings and noticed they had been reset. If you have a digital receiver, you should make sure that the audio is set to 'bitrate' and not PCM if you want surround sound.

I gave it one more try in the morning, leaving it running while I ate breakfast and did email. After an hour or so the download completed, the "do you want to upgrade" dialog came up, and I said "yes" before it timed out. The upgrade completed successfully, but unfortunatley the Live Free or Die Hard movie still hung the player.

The Blu-Ray discs I have watched did not have extras like different angles. Consequently, at this juncture, it is not worth the price premium. If I were again in a position to upgrade from regular DVD to High Definition, I would wait a little while and check the following:

With all the start up issues, it took nearly 5 minutes before I got to the title screen on any movie. This unit is not ready for production. Too many bugs, and the only way to upgrade firmware on my unit was to get a CD in the mail from Samsung.

Myself and many others have been calling Samsung on a weekly basis for the past four months about this, despite their continued claims to not knowing about the issues. My suggestion is to stay away from Samsung blu-ray players entirely, and if you are wantinga blu-ray player that you will never have problems with and is extremely fast to load titles, get a PS3, even if you arent intending to use it for games, it is still THE least expensive, fastest, most compatible, and most upgradeable blu-ray player out there.

No matter what movie I played, whether it was bitstream, PCM, DTS-HD or just Dolby D, I started having HDMI handshake issues about 15-20mins into a movie. At this point I started questioning my receiver and my tv but since this unit was only 2 days old, I sent it back for a refund and bought the Panasonic DMP-BD30 and could be happier. No more HDMI issues and it plays every movie like it should.

I'm going to watch a couple more movies, but I appear to have a defective unit, and will have to return. Couple other issues. Player will not stay on 1080p.

The BLU-RAY player had firmware issues out of the box and downloading updates was by no means a simple project, their customer support even recommended that they send a disc since they had so many problems with downloads. I got through the download process with no real help from Samsung. But that was only the start of my realization that Samsung support is a complete joke.

Many new movies, especially those that use the BD+ copy protection, or heavily use java menus simply do not like to play on this player because the manufacturer (Samsung) can't seem to be bothered to release firmware updates for its players, and is currently the defendant of a class-action lawsuit for this very reason. Starting about October 2007, more and more movies started being released that this player simply WOULD NOT PLAY. While most other Blu-ray player manufacturers released updates to resolve the issues within 3 days or so, some even releasing the necessary updates a day or two before the titles in question were even released.

The unit keeps on switching back to 1080i when you save the 1080p settings for whatever reason. I expected more from Samsung. I hope a new firware will resolve these issues;otherwise, it's not a bad unit.

My 1st Sammy 1400 was delivered with the 1.2 version of firmware and all seemed well until I tried to play Pirates 3 and it just hung on the menus. Corpse Bride also would not play. Samsung indicated that "some" 1400s were having issues and a firmware update would be coming shortly.

I knoe some people have rated this player poorly but I honestly can't complain, its been a good player so far despite some disc loading time issues. I will knock a star off for that but for the price this player does alot.

Sometimes it'll respond immediately and other times (usually when it's attempting to load a disc that's in the player), it may take over a minute. The latest firmware upgrades supposedly improve these issues, but I haven't really noticed much of a difference. My other complaint, like many others, involves the lack of a "Save" feature.

With all the start up issues, it took nearly 5 minutes before I got to the title screen on any movie. This unit is not ready for production. Too many bugs, and the only way to upgrade firmware on my unit was to get a CD in the mail from Samsung.

Once it started playing the picture was very nice (about as nice as my 1080i hd DVD player), but the utter lack of features, slowness and the fact that it is already obsolete by newer profile 1.1 players makes product another real lemon. And no, you can't make lemonade with this, so don't waste your money. If it goes under $50, pick one up, but until it does stay far, far away.

I bought this Blu-Ray, Samsung BD-P1400 player for Christmas '07 (along with a 46-inch LCD HDTV 1080p) and was excited by the prospect of seeing movies in hd. However, the reality was worse than I expected: I had to ask Blockbuster to send me 3 times the same movie (once the disc was broken, second time it refused to load; third time it played, but it still had problems paying it). Why pay the premium when you can't enjoy the movie from the beginning through the end?

However, this player does not support bitstreaming of Dolby True-hd or DTS-MA audio tracks to your receiver, simply reverting to the core dolby digital or dts tracks, providing the same audio experience you would hear on a DVD, but not the superior sound Blu-ray is capable of. This player is also very slow to load movies and very slow to respond to eject requests, even when the tray is empty. However.

Keep in mind, however, that any Blu-ray or hd-DVD player has more in common with a computer hard drive than it does with a DVD player). It's a minor annoyance but, again, something that shouldn't be occurring on even an irregular basis. The booklet that Samsung has included reminds me of a poorly edited Reaader's Digest version of a novel--you get something of the story but miss the significance because so much is missing from the story.

I'm hoping that Samsung will have this issue fixed fairly soon. It's only happened on two discs ("Ghostrider" and "Star Trek: The Original Series" when I wanted to watch the non-hd-DVD side of the disc on this player)so far but it is annoying. It's not an isolated problem related just to the 1400 as it has happened with other players (and hd-DVD players as well)but it wasn't a problem that I ever experienced with a DVD player.

Only the hd-A35 and the XA2 can do that, but both are significantly costlier than this player. The BD-P1400 can also output full 1080p/24 video, while the A3 can only send out 1080i and does not support 24fps output. Both are slow to load up, but the A3 is significantly slower, taking almost 2 full minutes to warm up the player and display video on your monitor/screen.

A few purchasers of this fine Blu-Ray player have been in a hurry to return or exchange it for other models because of some incompatabilities with newer Java-based titles such as RATATOUILLE, DIE HARD 4 or CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. These discs now play well after updating the player's firmware. Every Blu-Ray or hd-DVD player is going to run into this problem (and solution) as the technology matures.

Unlike hd DVD, Blu-ray is constantly changing and this player in about 3 or 4 months will be obsolete and unable to play any special features, and even some discs! If you are going to buy a Blu-ray player get one that is 1.1 compliant or not at all. Thankfully hd DVD is standardized and this is not an issue with them.

1, 2007), for most films, the 1400 now recognizes when you return to a film that has been paused. In a time when hd DVD and Blu-Ray are fighting, the 1400 is a good choice.

Blu Ray, the useless DVD player that companies are pushing on us now, thank God they are costly, lets buy, buy, buy Blu-Ray, and Blu-Ray is not a good buy, not the players, nor the disks, people are going to find that everything in this High definition age that started back in the 50's (not the players,) isn't better picture quality, but a lie, if you fool yourself into believing the players and T. V.'s look better then, they will, but they don't.

However, the people complaining it isn't 1.1 or 2.0 (no player is 2.0 yet) should stop. Nowhere in the description does it say this player is supposed to be 1.1. If you want to inform people there are updates coming and this player will not be able to benefit, go ahead, but to say it is horrible and obsolete because of it being 1.0 is misleading.

The new disc had the same problem, though, which told me that this was a player bug. Since the movie had been out for a day, I found a couple posts of other people having problems including one that got a confirmation from Samsung support. I called support, who eventually told me that the version 1.2 firmware on the website would fix the issue (hint, you need to know exactly what to ask and be persistent since this person would have sent me away with false information if I hadn't kept clarifying her responses).

Well I watched the movie - it was like me driving a manual ( I can't drive a manual) very jerky as the movie (brand new) kept pausing between frames. Like most people I do not take my movie out of the player immediately after watching it, so I turned of the DVD player until another day. Last weekend I went to watch another movie only this time my dvd player - THE NEW ONE I JUST GOT ON WEDS (and it is not refurbished brand spanking new out the manufactuer's box) would not turn on.

- Like most basic players it doesn't support some advanced features I'm forced to conclude that a lot of the people giving this unit poor reviews are, in fact, illiterate morons who didn't read the manual.

I really don't know why people get upset when it only takes two minutes to get ready to play. I have used it several times with Blu-Ray disks rented from Netflix with no problems. I am still waiting for the eight free movies.

I am not a discriminating fellow, so I am going to generalize like most people that a $600 Blu-Ray player is going to have roughly the same picture quality as this $300 unit. I would agree with others that the startup time for movies is a good 30sec to a minute. The lack of a "bookmark" feature does make things inconvenient.

While the remote is intuitive, the buttons are not backlighted and the size of the buttons for more minor functions do not lend themselves to people with large hands. Out of the box, it's usable but you'll likely get more functionality setting it up with someone with a modicum HD experience. The unit did freeze while watching Spiderman II.

If you're one of those people who pauses movies for extended periods of time, you'll find yourself having to search for the exact location you previously stopped the film. The player doesn't seem to have the common feature that enables movies to continue where you left off - neither on pause, nor if you decide to turn the player off. Hopefully, they'll be a future firmware upgrade that may possibly eliminate this issue; but at this point, it's difficult to say.
