After less then 2 weeks of use we found my self-sending the player back to Samsung on a warranty repair. Our Netflix disc was (is) locked in the player with non-responsiveness to manual resets, simple open/close, and on/off functions. Samsung was going to make me pay to ship it back to them until we made such a fuss they said, "Well for you we will this time".

Once it started playing the picture was very nice (about as nice as my 1080i HD DVD player), but the utter lack of features, slowness and the fact that it is already obsolete by newer profile 1.1 players makes product another real lemon. And no, you can't make lemonade with this, so don't waste your money. If it goes under $50, pick one up, but until it does stay far, far away.

I contacted Samsung and was told to update the firmware which I had already done before ever even using the unit. Samsung then told me they were aware of problems with the unit playing new releases but could not state when the firmware release would be available to correct the problem. Needless to say I am very disappointed with the unit and am pursuing returning it.

However after recent learning about Profiles 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 I decided to return it and cancel. Unfortunately this player does not support the newer profiles coming out soon, thus it's really a waste to buy this old archaic hardware that won't play interactive features like PiP. 1.1 is Picture in Picture, a second video player.

I bought this Blu-Ray, Samsung BD-P1400 player for Christmas '07 (along with a 46-inch LCD HDTV 1080p) and was excited by the prospect of seeing movies in HD. However, the reality was worse than I expected: I had to ask Blockbuster to send me 3 times the same movie (once the disc was broken, second time it refused to load; third time it played, but it still had problems paying it). Why pay the premium when you can't enjoy the movie from the beginning through the end?

Or anything, for that matter, as it had stopped responding to all functions. I had to pull the plug and spent the next day trying everything to get it working again. But it still wouldn't respond, and worse, it wouldn't eject my movie.

I received this piece of junk - it never worked - the sound skips, the picture freezes - it is criminal that Samsung is permitted to sell a piece of junk like this.

After buying & testing out this player, I came to a conclusion that the Blu-Ray format is still "Broken" and needs repair ASAP. Many of my Blu-Ray movies would not play and the load times on other that do play took way too long, some even froze. I have the most up-to-date firmware, so that is not the problem.

unit died, no power, couldnt get dvd out of unit before sending back to amazon. called samsung, got somebody in india wonted to service unit, told them hell no i was sending it back to amazon.

Also, the unit would not connect to the internet via the Ethernet port. When I contacted Samsung, the customer service representative claimed that the Ethernet port was not for connecting to the internet, but for connecting to a computer (huh?!?). He was not phased when I pointed out that the manual (yes, I actually did read the manual) clearly states how to hook the unit to the INTERNET via the Ethernet port.

So unfortunately, if you do not have any of these programs then you have to purchase them or you're out of luck! The second issue I found when trying to update the firmware is that, the firmware has to be burned onto a CD-R or CD-RW. The player does not seem to recognize the information if it is in DVD-R or DVD-RW format.

We bought one, had to upgrade it to see 'Rise of the silver surfer' and it broke. So right now we have a player that has a Blu-Ray disc stuck in it and the only thing it ever does is greeting us with 'Hello' on its display when powering on and saying 'goodbye' when powering off. We tried to got support but unfortunately all they said is, that it is all our fault.

I'll probably return this device and wait for the studios to come to their senses or else wait for the quality on Blu-ray devices to come way, way up. Frankly the decision by the studios seems so illogical that I have to assume that there is some fairly crooked back-room dealing going on. Why else would they go with a format where the playback devices all have problems, the playback devices are more expensive, the format is still in flux, the discs are more expensive to manufacture, and the discs are more easily damaged (i.e., good luck getting a playable disc from Netflix)?

I tried the update firmware path but that didn't make it work any better. Thats when I read the reviews and told myself not to waste another minute on this. I wonder about the other reviews giving the unit 4 or 5 stars.

No power, no nothing. Sent it back for a refund. After reading all the other reviews, i should have not wasted my time on this Samsung Unit.

When a BLU-RAY disc is inserted it must load not simply play as on a DVD (this is true on all BLU-RAY players). On the Samsung I purchased this process seemed noisy at first and got progressively worse to the point that I can no longer play BLU-RAY disc on my player. I called customer support and was told that they have no replacement program.

At current count there are at least a dozen major movie titles that simply will not play, with another dozen or so requiring workarounds or have other issues that detract from the experience. Myself and many others have been calling Samsung on a weekly basis for the past four months about this, despite their continued claims to not knowing about the issues. My suggestion is to stay away from Samsung blu-ray players entirely, and if you are wantinga blu-ray player that you will never have problems with and is extremely fast to load titles, get a PS3, even if you arent intending to use it for games, it is still THE least expensive, fastest, most compatible, and most upgradeable blu-ray player out there.

After 3 hours on the Phone with Samsung's tech support we were told to update the firmware. That did not work either. Overall this unit is a piece of junk and deserves the scrap heap!!

I am currently still waiting for a CD from Samsung after I was unsuccessful in trying to connect my Samsung Blu-Ray Player to the internet and it would not read the disc I burned on my computer. And, incidentally, Samsung customer service is completely unhelpful...it is good to see that the better technology won the format war. My sympathies to Toshiba.

How it doesn't

This is a fantastic player, produces an absolutely beautiful picture, is awesome for its price, and also plays the new soundtracks in Dolby True HD and DTS Master audio for the same sound they produce with at the studio. I am very happy with this machine for the price I paid, it is one excellent value and I use it every night for movies. It also makes your regular dvd collection look near high def quality with great upscaling to 1080p or 1080i depending on what your tv is capable of.

I am very satisfied with this player and I'm happy I did not take all the reported negatives too seriously. Perhaps, many of the reported issues have been solved. All I can report is that mine works perfectly so far, and I have recommended it to many of my friends when asked for an opinion.

If you believe some of the reviews here, you would be very reluctant to purchase this blu-ray player. I held my breath the first time I popped a new disc in the tray and even as the load status indicator inched its way forward. I honestly had a "whats the big deal?" feeling as everything ran flawlessly.

The HD sound (Dolby DIgital Plus, Dolby Digital TrueHD, & DTS-MA) bitstreamed to my Onkyo 805 is amazing! As is the picture... Ratatouille, Surf's Up, 300, March of the Penguins, Transformers, The Departed, Sopranos Season 6, and many others have fantastic video picture on my SXRD-60XBR1!

I have a PS3 and a Sony 300 S Blu-ray player, and they are both excellent blu-ray players. However, I love my new Samsung 1400 BD it can decode DTS HD sound, and it makes for a wonderfull movie watching experience. The first thing a new owner should do is go to samusung.com and download the latest firmware update (it is a fast simple process).

Hi I own the Samsung BD-P1400 ever since it was first release and everything is great. I mean this Blu-ray player can send True-HD and DTS-HD MA via bitstream. I don't think you can find another Blu-ray at this price that can decode those sound.

As someone who purchased the very first Blu-Ray player on the market, I can say, with hindsight, how far the technology has come. This unit supports uncompressed TrueHD sound for a much more realistic soundtrack, HDMI 1.3 for the full color spectrum, and includes an Ethernet Port for firmware updates (which some new spec unit do not include). This unit upscales standard def DVDs as well as any stand alone unit I used (incl my Oppo 981).

For its price this is a steal. The audio and video quality here is great, the quality and selection of Blu-ray is top notch and you can be fairly confident you'll be getting blu-ray format movies made for you for years to come.

There is no perfect player yet. Technology will continue to change - perfection is a moving target. But if you want to play Blu-ray and DVD's, with great picture and sound, and connect it to your home stereo system with 5.1 analog, this is your best choice.

This machine does a great job of making regular DVD's look good on my big TV, so you can use this one machine to play everything. A lot of people say the PS3 is the best Blu-ray player on the market, yet it does NOT upscale regular DVD's.

I chose this Samsung BD-P1400 because of the free movie offer, price and the fact that it matched the Samsung HDTV that I just bought. I knew about the quirks and encountered some strange things that were immediately solved by upgrading the firmware. I did the upgrade by the CD method outlined in the manual.

I got this player for Christmas and it is outstanding. It has played everything I've thrown at - including the latest Blu-ray movies just released in December - it and delivers perfect picture and sound quality on my 65" 1080p HDTV. Following the instructions in the Owner's Manual to update the unit's firmware before using it worked perfectly.
10 months ago @ Amazon
the new Blu-ray "Live Free Die Hard" contains a note letting you know the software upgrade may be needed. Lastly, remember this is HDMI 1.3 compatible..so in order to use 1.3 capabilities, you need a cable and TV which is HDMI 1.3 compatile also....the picture is great. Buy this player and upgrade the software right away.

After updating the firmware, it has been flawless. Amazing picture, quiet unit, looks great in the entertainment rack along with my HD DVD player. The upconversion is wonderful!

However, both movies looked and sounded incredible. Both movies played perfectly without any single problem and the picture quality was so amazingTthen i tried 2 standard dvd's to play in it and both played perfectly either with no single problem. Then I decided to go back in best buy to buy some more Blu-ray movies i bought,Ghost Rider,The Day After Tom.,TMT,Troy,300,Fantastic 4 Rise of The Silver Surfer, and guess what all of them played perfectly in my BD-P1400 with no any single problem that other reviewers mentioned and again the picture quality was amazing, and now i am so satisfied with my purchased or maybe i just got lucky that i have not experience any problems with my BD-P1400.my advice is or just maybe, before you hook up your BD-P1400 to your HDTV or before you play anything in it i think you need to update your player first with the latest firmware.

Load times were perfectly reasonable (at most ~60 seconds) and the playback is absolutely incredible. DVD upscaling is more impressive in my mind.

In brief: Pros: Outstanding picture quality---my wife and I say, even for stills, "Polaroid picture!", breathtaking. Amazon's _$280_ price for this leading-edge technology package is still unbelievable.

I'm using this with a 42inch 1080p Samsung LCD TV. Get this...we are used to 1080i HD programs but when my daughter walked in and saw the Blueray images from "Meet the Robinsons" she said HOLY COW what is with that picture its sooo REAL. Looks sharps, works well, firmware update over the internet wired cat5 jack worked.
