How it sucks
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first10 months ago @ AmazonHad the TV for 6 months until the plasma display panel began to fail - numerous green and red dots throughout the picture. We went through the Samsung warranty and were told by the repair shop, after 4 weeks of waiting, that the TV was beyond repair. Samsung contacted us a week later and told us that they would replace the TV, but that we would have to pay for the shipping.
12 months ago @ AmazonAfter some research, it appears that this is a very recent logic board issue that exists not only on the 5054 model, but on the 44 and 64 models as well. Some have claimed that replacing the logic board will fix the issue, but I have been unable to verify the veracity of this. In short, if you buy this TV you are gambling that the flicker issue will either not exist, or not be noticeable to you.
9 months ago @ AmazonIt is sort of like when a pixel goes out on your monitor or when you have a floater in your eye - for a while you don't notice it, but as soon as you do you can't not see it. I've generally had ok experiences with Samsung products, but after spending $2k on a TV, then getting it replaced with a TV that was selling for $1200 that is inferior in almost every tangible way, I will never buy from them again.
9 months ago @ AmazonEven still, I mostly watch sports, so I could tolerate this too, but the worst part, and the clincher for why I am fighting with Samsung to get rid of this dog, is the burn-in problem. After 1 month of moderate viewing (1-2 hours/day)of mostly HD channels without sidebars, the sidebar lines are permanently burned-in (I would estimate that I've watched channels that have sidebars about 20-30% of the time).
12 months ago @ AmazonDisappointed, I sent the TV back for an exchange. The next TV did not exhibit any of these same issues and, as stated earlier, I believe it was an isolated problem with that particular TV I received. The new TV worked fine, but after a few weeks of viewing I noticed a very subtle flickering of the image while watching.
10 months ago @ AmazonA Samsung tech came out and agreed the spot was due to a defective panel. Samsung then rejected the warrantee claim due to the fact that they will not cover any burn-in, even from a defect. Unfortunately for the customer that Samsung, will not stand by the quality of their product.
12 months ago @ AmazonRight up until I noticed that the glass was broken, my worst nightmare. What happened next is what prompted me to write the review.
11 months ago @ AmazonWe regret buying this tv because it is sooooo grainy!!! We have had items burn into the screen already and have only owned it for 1 month. Do not waste your money on this tv, I wish I did not.
10 months ago @ AmazonThey responded that Samsung's were known to have video noise issues and that I would have to upgrade to a Panasonic or Pioneer to get a better picture. I was so disappointed in the Sammy that I readily agreed and exchanged it plus some additional green for a Pioneer 5080HD. Turning on the Pioneer for the first time was a jaw dropping experience.
9 months ago @ AmazonInitially, I was some what apprehensive buying this plasma over Panasonic or Pioneer; however, I have been nothing but pleased with it. There was some burn in at first but after watching it over the course of the last month, those burn ins have all but stopped.
10 months ago @ AmazonIt wasn't so much that the picture was bad - it just wasn't good. Blacks were grainy and different hues of the same color had blocky transitions rather than smoothly blending. Using various picture and quality settings (DNIe, black enhancement, etc.) helped, but what worked for one scene invariably did not for another.
10 months ago @ AmazonHowever, ghosting on the Samsung was very apparent even when simply displaying the Samsung's menu for a few minutes. After watching a two hour movie recorded from Comcast, the "ABC Family" logo appeared in the lower right corner for several hours afterward. I began to get very nervous about what would happen if we made just one mistake and left the set on the same channel all day.
9 months ago @ AmazonI live in the same state as the Amazon warehouse and my delivery was scheduled for twenty days after date of shipment. I was able to speed that process along by picking it up at the local terminal, but twenty days is ridiculous (I could literally have walked from their warehouse to my home in less time). Product, good.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe speakers on this set are absolutely pathetic, I run surround sound, but hate to have it on ALL the time, I've made some minor adjustments to make it sound a little better, but they are still pretty poor.
9 months ago @ AmazonIt was a known issue and Samsung eventually agreed to replace it after 3 visits from a service tech could not solve the problem. They sent me the HP-T5054 as a replacement.
10 months ago @ AmazonThe TV burns in very quickly. If I leave the DRV paused for 10 minutes the picture burns in, it goes away after I watch TV for an hour or so, but I am thinking long term this might not continue to be the case. I wish they put a DV and DVI jacks on the side or back, or at least another pair of AV connectors, getting the DVD player VCR and my sons V-tech plus console connected took some planning.
12 months ago @ AmazonI had read that there was nothing to worry about if it came in defective, but reading it and experiencing are two different things.
12 months ago @ AmazonSo here is my overall take on why I bought this unit: I went with the less expensive 720p - despite what the dude at BestBuy told me - because 1080p isn't very accessible now, only available on the BlueRay and HDDVD, but not broadcast.
12 months ago @ AmazonFriends invited over did not seem to notice this, but after pointing it out to them, they saw it and were annoyed by it as well. It is only a matter of time before you see it, and then it becomes very distracting.
12 months ago @ AmazonSadly, the TV also seems to suffer from some emerging technical issues that you may want to think twice about before purchasing. My first TV for lack of a better word was a lemon. It started to make a high pitched electrical chirping sound after a week of operation and went through extended periods where the sound would cut in and out.
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonSo anyway, this was a great stopgap TV for me to use for several years at a great price with awesome picture until both my DVD collection and TV/Cable broadcast get upgraded. Did I mention Samsung is the best value in my opinion?
12 months ago @ AmazonPictures are superb, sound in contrast to few reports, is excellent as far as I can tell. Once the cable box is setup properly, the HD picture is just superb.
12 months ago @ AmazonI was impressed with the ease of ordering, the confirmation process, the delivery and setup, all accomplished in less than 10 calendar days. I am pleased with the result, and most of all the picture!!!
13 months ago @ AmazonOverall, this Plasma is a great deal. I did alot of shopping at Circuit City and BB, and compared them on the wall, beside a 5000.00 Sony, you can't tell the difference, beautiful picture...other than the sound, I have nothing bad to say about this set, go get one today!!!!!!
12 months ago @ AmazonTV is beautiful! I love it,great picture, great color; A+ BUT watch out for burn in.
13 months ago @ AmazonPicture quality has great "image liveliness", sort of the equivalent to "presence" in audio. Far better IMHO than most on the market and reminiscent of some tube color tvs that I saw play over the years.
13 months ago @ AmazonWe have been quite satisfied with the TV since we got it. You do need to have HD content to appreciate this TV. Not much surprise here.
12 months ago @ AmazonYou will get you TV as fast as the retail outlets could home deliver. I saved $400-$500 dollars over the local prices for this product. The picture quality on this TV displaying HD DVD and OTA signals is amazing, don't use the display at retail outlets to judge a TV, read the professional and consumer reviews to see what is consistently said about a product.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe price was $400 below BestBuy and Tweeter, no sales tax and free shipping through Amazon. Eagle shipping did an excellent job of delivering and setting the set up.
10 months ago @ AmazonPurchased product after reading all the excellent reviews. Initially, picture was excellent as well as the cost.
11 months ago @ AmazonSome one needs to tell the networks to make their logos transparent if they must show them. Overall this is a great TV.
10 months ago @ AmazonThe TV is very well esthetically designed, hiding the speakers gives it an ultra modern look. Otherwise, for the price this thing is unbeatable, my in-law's sony was well over 3 G's.
13 months ago @ AmazonI already own a samsung 46" LCD, bought it in January of this year. I wanted a bigger TV for my Den, so I moved my 46" to our bedroom, and decided to buy this 50". First let me say that the delivery was outstanding, I live in NW Louisiana, and it came from Irving Texas, got it in 2 days.
13 months ago @ AmazonNow for the picture, Amazingly clear, crisp and fantastic. Colors are bright and realistic.
12 months ago @ AmazonI love the bright colors and responsiveness and wide viewing angle of a plasma, perfect for the room it was going in.
12 months ago @ AmazonCouldn't be happier with the tv and with the whole Amazon experience. Don't be afraid to purchase a big tv over the internet. The delivery was better than if you purchased at a store.
11 months ago @ AmazonThe picture is great even displaying standard definition content. I use it to play video games mostly (Xbox 360, Wii, PS2), and especially with the Xbox 360 games the graphics are crisp and colors are vibrant.
12 months ago @ AmazonI just received my 5054 yesterday and I have to say it is a great looking TV. Amazon and Eagle both provided fast and excellent service.
10 months ago @ AmazonI fully expected that any modern HD would knock my socks off compared to our old clunker. I did the usual Googling and read the reviews on Amazon, Cnet, and paid for a Consumer Reports subscription to see what they had to say. What I found was that, while this set wasn't at the top of the heap (at $1,200 I didn't expect it to be) it was generally well regarded with few negative comments from anyone.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe speakers on my 46" are excellent, deep bass, extremely powerful, clear and LOUD.
