How it sucks

The thumb-slide that slides the USB jack in and out was a little frustrating at first--you have to be fairly measured in how you press it, otherwise it just won't budge--but I'm getting used to how to move it right, so it's not much of a problem. The only other complaint I can really think of is how difficult it was to remove from the packaging (but then, what computer product doesn't seem to have that problem these days?).

I would give this 5 stars, but the U3 application adds another layer of complexity that I was not expecting and it pissed me off trying to remove it, only to have it re-load the application upon the next insertion.

With U3 you can use the same applications on any compatible computer, without having to re-load your personal settings (i.e. bookmarks, favorites, passwords, web receipts, cookies, etc.) I'd certainly buy another one of these any day, especially after someone told me that it can hold 2,000LBs of pressure before snapping off ...

There is a program that comes with the flash drive which you should delete because it slows up the load time when you first plug it into your computer. Just reformat it after you delete the file.

The dark horse of the pre-installed software was Skype. At first I didn't see the advantage, until I was on the road using someone else's computer. At this point the only problem we've had was when U3 detected an update to Launchpad, I selected yes, it saved all of the data, but deleted the installed U3 programs, and when I tried to re-install Avast it said the trial period had expired.

They finally said they'd replace it, conceding that they'd had some "bad batches". That was two weeks ago and I'm still waiting. They've lost a good customer.

U3 is a fantastic technology, easy to install and use, built in repository access - the only shortcoming is that it doesn't work with Macs or Linux (at least not yet). Plug in the USB stick, and it mounts two drives, one acts like an auto-mounted CD drive and runs the Launchpad, the second is the standard drag and drop disk. The Launchpad includes access to the drag and drop disk, a variety of U3 applications, easy to use configuration, password protection, and my favourite - an EJECT button (to safely remove the memory stick).

They do not include a lanyard for the drive anymore. I contacted Sandisk to enquire about this and they could not answer my question. They did say they offered a pack of lanyards that you could buy but I haven't found out where to purchase them.

CompUSA was selling a 1Gb plastic the same day for $25 that I bought a 4Gb Titanium Cruzer for $24 from J&R. Great deal, good product. My only caveat is that sometimes U3 software is not perfect.

I would think that this might be more of a problem with a plastic case rather than a titanium case. My titanium cased Cruzer failed, so I opened the case and noting the tiny legs from the microprocessors, it seemed to me that they could be easily shorted out.

SanDisk's website and most sellers, say it is only for Windows. I emailed SanDisk's technical staff. You can use it on OS X 10.1.2+, but you can't use the U3 programs.

I like the retractable connector, but it is tight-fitting for older USB ports; don't know why. The included software seems like a good idea, and can be deleted. The company needs to do a better job explaining how, because it seems there are some possible problems you could cause yourself.

It is stylish and is well protected with the liquid metal case covering which can add some expense to the overall product, but does add some phenomenol strength to the case. I am not a U3 fan, but you can either tolerate it or remove it. With 4GB you have a lot of room to work with.

I even remember even seeing a video on Cnet, when they took a car, and drove over the drive and it still works. Since then, flash drives have become significantly smaller, and in suit, SanDisk has released an even smaller flash drive in the titanium series. This means that with technology, the drive becomes smaller, and with SanDisk encasing it in Titanium steel --you still get that durability.

The U3 system is a bit controversial; I like it, but if you're not a fan, there are plenty of ways to remove it.

Sometimes there is a price to pay for being an 'early adapter', but trust me, a Cruzer or something like a Cruzer will probably be in your life for years to come. If you have questions about U3, please check out their website.

The only thing that I don't like is the U3 program that comes with it. I always get error messages.

PS. Other experience: PNY cases break easily from regular use. I've had good luck with Kingston so far.

I spent the extra money to get the Cruzer with a metal case. Big mistake! I keep it on my keychain and the metal case is constantly hitting my keys making a very loud noise every time I take a step.

How it doesn't

The 4GB Cruzer Titanium thumb drive is perfect for my job. Small, rugged, and dependable, I use it both while travelling and at home all of the time. U3 is great if you need to carry your programs with you as well.

I bought one each of these for the research team, and it makes backup much easier to know they have most of their user files locally stored. I'm traveling between multiple offices and using multiple platforms, and now I just keep everything on the stick and do a tar cvf archive.tar whenever I'm on the main office machine. Nice look, nice feel, very nice!

Just go step by step. I did this and it works beautifully with my iMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11! If you have a new Intel Mac, you don't even need a PC friend.

We replaced these (and removed all the trialware) with Allway "Synch n Go" (fantastic) and RoboForm2Go (also excellent) - both are easy to use, and have free U3 versions. We also kept the Avast Anti-virus, for when you need an external computer scan.

I love the flexibility of portable apps. It's great.

I bought the SanDisk 4GB USB Flash drive because I need a lot of space to store documents. I have been extremely pleased with the capacity of this item. The price was low, and the quality was high.

The flash drive works so well that when I saw the 4GB version I couldn't resist. Running Firefox off of the Cruzer is great. It saves all of your bookmarks and settings which is really convenient.

You need a PC friend to download the little program from the SanDisk website that deletes U3 on your SanDisk in his USB port. Then, use your Mac's Disk Utility to Erase Free Space, Name and Volume Format in Mac OS Extended (journaled) for full storage capacity. Well worth the effort.

So if you need a good flash drive, I highly recommend this one.

I am very pleased with this product. And I can save space on my Hard Drive by putting certain things on my Flash Drive.

Great product....excellent price and incredibly fast shippping.

I love this thing and if you are looking for a flash drive reliable both logically and physically, I'd go with this one.

Otherwise, I immediately unistalled the "u3" software. Nothing impressive to me there. I can always install it later, but this is my first drive and I just wanted a lot of storage.

What can I say that hasn't been said already. It is a very fast drive.

This is the best. Buy this and you won't regret.

Great little flash drive... I hook it to my key chain and have it whenever I need it.

Bought this for $25; a pretty agreeable price to have 4GB worth of data carried around with you in your pocket. I am quite pleased with the product thus far.

I do have a concern about the metal casing, as other reviewers have mentioned; I have heard of what can happen to USB drives like these in regard to static electricity discharge. (In an attempt to counteract this I have actually made a wrapping out of electrical tape that goes around most of the surface for the drive.
