How it sucks

This 2-minute experience was a bad first impression, and lead me to believe that Wii controllers would be difficult to master, imprecise, and frustrating. I assumed Super Mario Galaxy would also be hindered by this controller system, and it was not clear from the literature if I could "fall back" on using a classic controller. These fears kept me from buying a Wii for a year, but turned out to be completely overblown.

Swimming with mario still sucks, I had swimming in every game it is slow and hard to control. The game is not as easy as some people say it is, there are some hard levels and the game can become a bit frustrating at times. Last is not a big of a deal, but although the controls are great sometimes the controls don't really respond to what your doing, like when your doing a spin attack, the spin ended up being a lil late at times but maybe it was just me.

The worst part is that,we just checked status, the item is still at the facility (it says the carrier was notified for pick up; and it is 3:25 pm on 24th right now). So apparently, my daughter won't have it for Xmas, and this is what she mostly wanted from Santa. If we knew, we would have purchased it at a local store instead...

It is a lot of fun, and at times frustrating, but very rewarding after earning a hard-fought star. There are boards on Super Mario Galaxy where I've gotten killed dozens of times (or more) before beating it and earning the star.

It's doesn't matter if when you quit you have 5 or 50 lives you'll always start with 4. Swimming under water is still a pain to do especially on missons were your reacing or under a time limit and you need to not waste and movment.

There are a wide variety of galaxies, ranging from the "main" galaxies - with story events and multiple stars - to the "bonus" galaxies that tend to only have one star but are given in a minigame or similar test (for example, the Manta Ray surfing games that use the Wii remote to steer and boost). The gameplay itself, apart from the planetoids, is similar to earlier 3d Mario games. Mario jumps and hops the same as other games, though his melee attacks are replaced by a spinning attack.

You're presented with the opportunity to collect 120 Power Stars, but you only have to obtain 60 in order to defeat the final boss, Bowser. If a level is too difficult, simply return to the Comet Observatory and try another one.

There are way too many dumb minigames. I want to see more original, creative level design and instead I get manta racing, chasing rabbits, breeding Chocobos (not the last one, but only because Square hates Nintendo and only makes games for Nitendo's consoles that fail miserably). Until they include make a minigame the has Mario murder his half-wit brother and use the skull as a hand puppet, I think that Mario games should just stick to platforming.

The only things that are missing are the belly flop, sort of like a dive head first, and the punch. The Wii remote also controls a cursor on the screen which is used to collect "star bits" and to throw said star bits at enemies and allies. The Luma allies cutely respond to being hit with a star bit as if it is a tasty treat.

I found this game to have more things that were irritating than were fun. For those of you who loved Super Mario Sunshine and Donkey Kong 64, maybe Ratchet and Clank and Spyro, but are not such fans of the first three Super Mario Bros. games, or other strictly platforming games, you might also be disappointed and find this game frustrating.

I bought galaxies when it came out, and started playing it. I initially got the first star and then stopped playing. A week or two later I started up again, and now I'm getting addicted to it.

I played without the second player and still only died a handful of times, usually on the timed courses or by accident as opposed to it being too difficult. Many of the levels are also small and short, which was dissapointing. Don't let that throw you, though, it's still the best game I've played for a long time.

So, as a big Nintendo fan, I was a bit dissappointed with the lack of blockbuster game titles on the Wii. Sure, we have Zelda, or Metroid Prime 3, but the plumber was missing, until now. I honestly did not have too much interest in the game, but when my brother told me that he bought it, I thought "Sure, let's try it." Now, I can safely say that this is one of the most innovative games I have played in a while.

The camera angles are often locked, but when the camera is not fixed, your control over it is extremely limited. This can be quite toublesome, considering you are in a fully 3D environment, and to make a successful jump - especially onto a moving target - can depend entirely on your view. This also can make spotting extras and secrets a matter of luck.

- The boards with complete motion control such as the ball-rolling or ray-surfing were ok, but not my favorite and sometimes frustrating. - The first boss. My roommate who hasn't played as many 3-D games as I have really struggled with this.

there are some occassions where i will get frustrated with the camera but i still dont find enough reason to give it anything below a 4 star if anything. If there's one reason to buy a Wii... Mario Galaxy should be it.

You find yourself trying to go one way but mario goes the other. Not a big deal but can be annoying. The camera isn't to bad but again has it's annoying points.

The biggest positive lesson I get from this game is to never quit. Just keep going. If there were ONE GAME that you could buy for your Wii, THIS IS IT, FOLKS.

It might not be the hardest game for hardcore gamers, but the boards have a lot of variety that will likely play to the strengths of different people. Also, the comet-challenges up the difficulty on some boards. If anything I would say that the very beginning has too steep a learning curve for 3D newbies, but that can be overcome after a little initial frustration.

Super Mario Galaxy requires one Wii controller (which is a cross between a more traditional console game controller and a remote control such as for your TV) and one "Wii nunchuk" add-on controller -- it does not work with the "Wii classic" add-on controller nor does it work with your old GameCube controllers (which are still necessary to play your old GameCube games on the Wii). However, the new Wii controllers work great and in no way hinder the enjoyment of Super Mario Galaxy.

How it doesn't

My husband and I (ages 32 and 28) love this game!!! My 6.5 year old loves helping her dad play by using the second controller and helping him collect stars (which is great as she can do that and feel involoved without messing up the game). The games is very entertaining and has the same charm as previous Mario games.

I've played thousands of video games in my day, and I can honestly say this is a new classic, truly amazing, and easily one of the best (most fun) video games ever made. Why bother writing a glowing review for a game that is already swamped with glowing reviews? You can no doubt learn all you need to learn about the game's mechanics, story, etc.

He has to show it to everyone who comes to our house and he has so many great things to say about it. I love that it has some old school sounds and icons from the original games. It's great fun.

I have played Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and New Super Mario Bros. on the DS in recent years (plus the original Mario 1, 2, and 3 in the past), and can say without a doubt this is the best Super Mario game ever made. It takes the fun of the 2-dimensional Mario games and remains very 3D, beautiful, and accessible.

We have played it every day since getting it, determined to solve (win) the game, and there is so much to see and do in this game; so, it will take a while to solve it all. Graphics are great, the controls are used in a lot of different ways, everything is oriented in 3D, which proves very interesting in several parts of the game. One of the best Super Mario games I've ever played!

In anticipating this game I naturally talked it up to my girlfriend (nothing's better than a game we can both get in to). However, I quickly realized as I started playing that while I found the game amazing and the boggling camera angles interesting, my girlfriend was made virtually ill just watching.

I can strongly recommend this game. This is the best Mario game since Super Mario World for SNES and, for me, has been more fun than any of the other Mario titles. Don't even hesitate; it is great.

The game is incredibly fun, providing a great mix of eye-candy, intuitive and fun gameplay, and a gentle learning curve! I HIGHLY recommend this game! Whatever drugs the designers were on, I want some!

Sets the graphical bar for the Wii with 16x9, 480p support (with the component cable), very fluid animation that never drops below 60fps, great lighting and textures. The controls are very intuitive and easy to learn. The game makes great use of the wiimote and nunchuck controller Extrememly fun, Innovative, and addictive gameplay (even for a mario game).

It is quite different, with lots of planets to conquer and some unusual vantage points. I ordered it with the official Prima guide and I know he will love finding every little "secret" to this game. His friends have all asked for the game as well after trying it, so there must be something to all those kid's opinions!

On another he learns to ride on the back of water creatures. On other planets he learns to buzz around like a bee, fling himself from weird sticky rubbery things, swing on a trapeze-like contraption, kick melons at enemies, use creatures as springboards, use giant flowers as hang gliders, ice skate, and much much more.

Each level is designed to be fun and challenging...and figuring out how to defeat the boss creatures is too much fun. My 4 year old loves watching us play while he uses the 2nd controller to collect the Star Bits as we play. It's a perfect family game.

Everything is bright and colorful and cartoon like suiting the games enviroment. You'll find yourself loving the simple and straight foward designs of the levels and enemies. Music: The soundtrack is great.

There is so much variety in Galaxy, it's really quite amazing. The worlds/galaxies/space rocks all look amazing. They all have their own unique feel, and all of them were carefully designed.

Speaking of UI (user interface) design, I love the Co-operative mode, which allows my wife to play along even in a casual manner. And since the Co-op mode is entirely optional, a partner can leave the game and rejoin at a later time.

The hardest levels are the bonus levels, which I'm pretty sure you don't have to play in order to beat the game, making this a great game for all ages... at least 5-40 year olds; I've heard that people in retirement homes have been playing the Wii, and I could see them having difficulties controlling Mario when he's upside-down on the underside of a planet.

A few times my kids actually jumped up with joy raising their hands in the air like Rocky! How amazing! A toy that actually UPLIFTS your spirits!

This has to be one of the best, smartest and most fun Mario games I have ever played. When I saw the previews of the game on some of the websites last year I was skeptical. I was unsure how running around a small globe in space would be all that fun.

There was excessive dialogue that i couldn't skip past. Spent way too much time reading from fairy-like creatures. Graphics are good, actually great by Wii standards, and i don't doubt this is the best mario bros for wii.
12 months ago @ Amazon
It appeals to almost all age-groups, the graphics are amazing, the sound it up to par with the other mario games (i.e. just about perfect), and the boss fights and challenges are almost endless. I'll repeat myself: This game is awesome!!!
