How it sucks
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first13 months ago @ AmazonYes, I agree with some reviewers that it is tedious to return to the Temple of the Ocean King all the time, but that is made more than made up for by shooting, stabbing, hooking and bombing all the very ingeniously invented monsters of the various temples and islands. But apart from that you can also fish, trade, dig up rupees, pimp up your boat, fly with chicken. And you have to solve some riddles that are difficult, but not impossible.
12 months ago @ AmazonSome of the bosses were cool, but you would reach them so quickly after entering a dungeon that they didn't have time to build up the suspense. Honestly, if this game were not part of the Zelda franchise, I would have given it 4 stars, but being Zelda I really did have higher expectations. Still worth buying, but not worthy of the name "Zelda".
10 months ago @ AmazonBut in this case, the graphic design of the Phantom Hourglass for DS has not delivered any disappointment by far. I enjoy the cartoonish design of the characters, places, and objects. And it's certainly a satisfaction to not have to worry about the DS freezing up because of having to process a game that it can't handle.
12 months ago @ AmazonDungeons (although not as large and intricate as previous games from the same title) are still challenging enough to keep you occupied. Collecting ship parts will consume you the same way Pokemon did (well, maybe not, but that doesn't mean you don't have to go around and trade them to collect them all). In the end, it's worth it, if for nothing else, just to see how it goes.
13 months ago @ AmazonIt's a bit awkward when you want to precisely control the speed of your character or do some specific action at a specific time (like running or rolling) but it's possible. Other than that, being able to tap on a bad guy and have the character dispatch it was kind of nice, particularly since the movement control is a bit awkward. Drawing paths to deploy the boomerang was a nice addition, though sometimes having to know certain targets lie offscreen made simple puzzles unnecessarily frustrating.
12 months ago @ AmazonI can do it, but it's kind of hard. --Movement, though fun, is a little difficult with the Stylus because you accidentally touch stuff that hurts Link: ex: I thought I had tapped the boomerang and was ready to throw it at a boss, but I ended up telling Link to run up and bump into the boss instead. --Sailing still takes a good chunk of time.
10 months ago @ AmazonSpeaking of maps, it is possible to write down notes on your map (normally relegated to the top screen, but can be "pulled" down to the touch screen); this is necessary in some points to get through areas by copying down safe routes through a trap-laden area or to mark where a particular treasure is. The options are diverse but simple, and an average player should be able to get the hang of the system pretty quickly. The only problem I had with control was that rolling (by making small circles on the edge of your screen) was difficult and got confused with regular movement.
10 months ago @ AmazonAlso, people look at me weird when I have to start blowing at my DS, I wish there could have been a button option to replace the blowing. And only being allowed to use the stylist made my wrist start to ache after awhile. It would of been nice if I could have had the option to be able to play off the D pad for at least some of the game, all of the buttons besides the power button are utterly useless.
11 months ago @ AmazonAfter a level, I have to return to The Temple Of The Ocean King, and run through everything again...on a timer? That means all the enemies, puzzles, etc. It was ridiculous.
12 months ago @ AmazonI had given up on my DS. I put it away for a few months. The technology of the unit is great but the game selection is terrible until now.
10 months ago @ AmazonThis particular version has been one of the most enjoyable both graphically and conceptually. The one TLOZ I never really got into was on the Game Cube (because I never bothered to buy a GC), but I remember my brother playing it on his and the graphic design of this version and that one seem very similar (cartoonish). Back then I thought it was disappointing, having obsessed over the TLOZs on N64.
10 months ago @ AmazonYou will not be able to take a break from it. You may be able to put it down, but only for a while. You WILL come back for more.
10 months ago @ AmazonOne of the things I enjoyed about Wind waker was being able to see different, distant lands but this one didn't have that. Instead, you are asked to go back several times to the same temple and even though you get to explore different floors and the difficulty increases, it tended to get old sometimes. Unfortunately, it is that aspect that may not make me want to play this game again for quite some time.
13 months ago @ AmazonAll in all, it's a good game though it is a bit weak for a Zelda title. While it is no Ocarina of Time, it is better than mask of zorrah (which had complex puzzles, but i found far too repetitive).
9 months ago @ AmazonThey practically spell most of the puzzles out for you, and it is a real disappointment in the difficulty area.
10 months ago @ AmazonThe graphics are a pretty good rendering of Wind Waker's graphical style, with only a slight decrease in smoothness to accommodate the DS's graphical limitations. The cel-shaded style remains intact and it is a pretty good job overall. The sound is about the same as it was in Wind Waker, with limited voice acting (Link's cries, specifically).
12 months ago @ AmazonThe main attraction in a Zelda game in in the intricate dungeons and this game is severely lacking. There are a good number of dungeons... that's not the problem.
12 months ago @ AmazonThats the only reason I gave it four stars! However, I loved it , and was excited to have another handheld Zelda game!
11 months ago @ AmazonWell, Phantom Hourglass does the same thing with the DS. You'll blow on the mic, write on the map, and every movement and combat is used exclusively with the stylus. This is how the DS was meant to be used.
12 months ago @ AmazonI would say that these style graphics aren't really meant for the DS. When characters faces are close up, some of the pixels look a little weird, as though they may have been saved in a jpg format using Paint. Overall this is just about the games only flaw.
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first13 months ago @ AmazonHere is my confession: I was once a die-hard Zelda fan and owned every console iteration in the series through the Wii title, Twilight Princess. At some point starting with the Mask of Zorrah and continuing through Twilight princess and this DS title, my interest in Zelda started to wane. While all Zelda titles are excellent games, I have been put off by their gut-wrenchingly cutesy storylines, I find that particularly the beginnings of the story are almost too cutesy and the gameplay too simple to convince me to keep playing to get to the good parts (like the complex puzzles and the more powerful items).
11 months ago @ AmazonThis continues from the excellent hit Zelda and the Wind Waker and i'm surprise they didn't continue it on gamecube but either way this is the bomb!I just beat it the other day. I got this for Christmas and played it non stop!!This game is funny and the animation was great. This is good for anyone who loves a great adventure game like me!
12 months ago @ AmazonI've always been a fan of the Zelda series, but I think this one might be my favorite. Awesome, awesome awesome, incredible game. Easily worth twice it's price.
13 months ago @ AmazonTogether they have to defeat a whole array of increasingly scarier monsters before they can truely free Zelda. I admit it: I'm 44 and new to gaming. This game is rated as 7+ in the Netherlands (even though there are very few 7 year olds than can already read English), so I was kind of anxious about the childishness of the game, but, boy, did I have fun!
10 months ago @ Amazonif you're fan of zelda's games, you gotta have this one, the graphic are pretty good according to the nintendo ds capabilities, the soundtrack is great as usual in this saga, is not pretty long, but you will have an amazing time while you're playing it, and the history will captivate your attention from the beggining to the end. All that mixed with the control of the stylus and the use of the ds microphone to do some works make of this a great game for the collection even if you're not a fan ofzelda's games
10 months ago @ AmazonHowever, Zelda has become my favorite game now! The design is beautiful, the plot is well-thought and most of all is peaceful and entertaining at the same time! I love it, and now I just can't stop playing it!
12 months ago @ AmazonThis game was a far step from the old Minish cap and four swords. The game is one of the must have games for the ds. The boomerang is greatly improved as are many other objects including the new "Bombchus" The graphics and cinimatics are amazing and so are the ship customazations and some HARD puzzles.
10 months ago @ AmazonIt is fun, challenging, and very well-made. You have an abundance of weaponry and items, all of which you will use to navigate through the game's world and islands. Perhaps the best feature of the game is the fact that you are actually able to take notes on your map by writing with the stylus.
10 months ago @ AmazonI'm 28 years old and I've been playing The Legends of Zelda since before I can remember.
12 months ago @ AmazonBeing able to draw on the map comes in handy a few times, especially those who tend to forget things fast. This game also makes great use of the DS features.
13 months ago @ AmazonI you love all of the other Zelda games you'll love this one just as much.
10 months ago @ AmazonAs usual, this game follows a storyline involving Link and Zelda. And as usual, Link's purpose it to rescue Zelda from a dark lord. And to do this, as usual, you visit many different lands, interact with many different characters, visit many different temples to destroy their boss, and have lots of secrets to uncover and objects/weapons to obtain.
9 months ago @ AmazonThis is such a clever and useful tool, and I love it. However, the game is tainted by one thing: it is way too easy.
10 months ago @ AmazonIt is definately a must have for the DS Lite. I highly recomend the stragedy guide with it to experience the full benefit from your adventure.
10 months ago @ AmazonI love this game!
10 months ago @ AmazonThis game is one of the best games that I have ever played. The online multiplayer is fun. The adventure mode is pretty cool.
10 months ago @ AmazonAs far as all the Zelda games go, I've always enjoyed playing them.
13 months ago @ AmazonThis is a great game!
13 months ago @ AmazonOne word: AWESOME game! A must HAVE. Will absolutely recommend to anyone with a DS.
