How it sucks
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonI could not get it past the "Powering Up" screen. Another round of customer service and I got approval to mail back the replacement box. I refused to pay another $869 because I hadn't (and still haven't) received a refund for the previous payment.
13 months ago @ AmazonThe CableCard technology in the Tivo Series 3 still have a lot of bugs - I ended up needing to return mine because my cable company was unable to get the cable card slots to pick up anything except analog channels (no digital, no premium, and no HD). Without this capability, what's the point of upgrading from my Series 2? There are tons of posts in Tivo support forums about the lack of compatibility between the Series 3 and major cable providers (like Time Warner, Comcast, etc).
10 months ago @ AmazonThe TiVo Series 3 is a complete and total waste of money. I have spent more time and effort fighting with the cable company and the worthless machine to get it working....all without prevail. It really sucks because I love TiVo and the service, but I think they got a little ahead of themselves with the Series 3.
10 months ago @ AmazonAfter waiting for cards we realized that it was not the cards, but the tivo that was defective. Now it has been 3 months since I purchased the tivo and I have finally figured out it does not work. Amazon will not exchange it for me.
10 months ago @ AmazonHowever, the QAM tuner doesn't work unless you purchase a cablecard from your cable company (each one costs the same as renting a cable box from my cable provider and the Tivo needs 2 in order to handle dual-tuner functions). This is aggravating because most digital tv's these days will tune in the non-encryptyed digital stations on cable, but the Tivo doesn't. Tivo says it does in their FAQ, but it doesn't.
12 months ago @ AmazonI did this for a few weeks, but then it started to fail more frequently. After several days on the phone with the Tivo customer service (after long waits on hold ... and very boring music by the way), they agreed to replace my box.
10 months ago @ AmazonI think that there should be more time aloud to return this product since it does not function without cards that you have to obtain from another source. And you may find, as I did, that most cable companies will do anything for you to not have a tivo. After Amazon.com was no help at all on this matter I am taking my business elsewhere.
10 months ago @ AmazonThen the nightmare began. First of all, I had no idea about the fact that this unit required cable cards because Amazon's ad did not state so at the time. I called to get cable cards from my cable provider, Suddenlink, and was told that they would not give them to me.
12 months ago @ AmazonSometimes, just taking out the card and replacing it fixes it (even though Tivo tells you not to do this, sometimes it's the only thing that works). But SO many times program recordings are truncated or don't happen at all because the cards went out during the recording. Face it, an unreliable Tivo, which the Series 3 most definitely is, is almost worse than no Tivo at all.
12 months ago @ AmazonI was beginning to think I was going to be stuck with that piece of junk Motorolla DVR forever.
11 months ago @ AmazonI no longer resent interruptions during movies since I know I can just rewind and pick up from where I left off. And I no longer waste time watching shows I hate to kill the extra minutes while I wait for a movie to start or a political speech to end.
10 months ago @ Amazon(And for some, a nightmare!) Caution to future buyers: if you are hoping you can enjoy the unit right out of the box take heed. That is not going to happen unless you work for a cable company, have access to ample cable cards (many seem flawed), and know what you are doing with them.
12 months ago @ AmazonOnly beware that currently it cannot fully support the cable MCards as dual tuners so you will need two of them for the dual tuning. They say they are working on it. But I, nor Comcast, knew this and they only brought out one MCard on install.
10 months ago @ AmazonThere was very heavy static on all of the digital cable channels, and the tech told me it was a result of old, outdated cards. The tech then told me he had no idea when they would get new cards that work.
9 months ago @ AmazonI have a wireless network that handles traffic everyday, but a TIVO will not connect. Tivo second level support says even if I get it to once it will fail and fail often, I need to purchase the Tivo wireless device, for more money. This is blatant false advertisement, Tivo knows there series 3 will not work on wireless home networks but does not say so.
10 months ago @ AmazonOption 1: $8.00/month for a serviceable (although certainly not elegant or sexy) dual-tuner HD DVR from the Cable or Satellite Company. You pay only $8.00/month and the Cable company is on the hook to deliver you a working box. If it doesn't work, they'll typically credit you for the time that it was down.
7 months ago @ AmazonJust a heads up to clear some confusion--this product does not work with Directv or Dish--only works with cable. Great product, but this cuts out on half the potential customers out there.
10 months ago @ AmazonTivo has a new feature called Amazon Unbox and it's a nice concept, sort of like pay per view. The lame thing is none of the content out there is HD or surround sound content and also you only get a 24 hour viewing period. So I guess I won't be using that service.
11 months ago @ AmazonThey originally were trying to use one dual channel card, but they were unable to get it to work. If you run into the same problem, ask your cable company to use two single channel cards. According to Tivo, the multi channel cards will work with their latest software release.
11 months ago @ AmazonI recently bought a Tivo Series 3 on Amazon and could not epxress my joy enough! I was forced to use a cable company DVR for 6 months after I upgraded to HD. It was horrible!!
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first11 months ago @ AmazonYou get additional hard drive space, the on-unit display of what programs are recording, and the backlit remote. The ability to easily switch between tuners and record any 2 programs at once is amazing! No longer will we miss programs due to conflicts in the TV schedule when 2 of our favorite shows run at the same time.
8 months ago @ AmazonI had a little trouble with the cable cards, but that was the fault of the first installer (who was working while he was sick) from Mediacom. The second guy knew exactly what was needed and made sure he had everything with when he came out. So far everything seems to be working great.
13 months ago @ AmazonCosts incurred: $399 for the box (after rebate) + Tivo monthly fee ([...] multi-box discount) + Cable Card monthly fee ([...]), first cable card is free. In my opinion, well worth the investment. I have it hooked up to a SONY SXRD 60 inch XBR2 via HDMI and run the sound through my Sony ES receiver via optical and I'm loving it.
10 months ago @ AmazonThe dual tuner is great...recording two shows simultaneously is sweet. I love my TiVo. Worth every penny.
11 months ago @ AmazonEasy to set-up and very easy to use, including a very nice remote. The use of two tuners to record while watching another program previously recorded is extremely usefull. I am one of the few using it solely with over-the-air network broadcasts (no cable necessary in this area for the standard broadcast stations), and it works excellant in this mode.
11 months ago @ AmazonI can just catch a few minutes of something I really like. Connecting to my home wifi network was quite simple once I figured out how to convince the network to let TiVo in. Definitely a "Duh!" moment.
8 months ago @ AmazonWe now have both products, and TiVo is a clear winner. The on-screen menus are easy to use, and it is always being improved. It is a wonderful, reliable product with none of the negative features found in the Comcast Scientific Atlanta HD DVR.
8 months ago @ AmazonI now use the Tivo as my only cable box, since the cable box was component out and this is HDMI. Biggest feature I haven't seen mentioned (though I've only scanned the reviews): UnBox downloads right to your TiVo! In HD!
11 months ago @ AmazonMy wife and I both love it! Several of the features we love to use are:
13 months ago @ AmazonI highly recommend getting this, especially with the THX certification and bigger hard drive, paying [...] (after the rebate) versus the [...] for the new HD Tivo box with a smaller hard drive was a no brainer for me. A new software upgrade coming in November from Tivo (tivo to go)will allow me to transfer programming from my downstairs series 2 to my upstairs series 3 and vice versa for standard def programming. The [...] rebate takes 4- 6 weeks to receive AFTER having the box activated for 30 days.
11 months ago @ AmazonI love my new Series3 HD Tivo recorder! I had some problems with my cable provider installing the two cable cards, but after that was resolved, it's been a great addition to my TV viewing.
11 months ago @ AmazonIf you already have broadband internet access with a wireless network, you can transfer shows between your Tivo box and computer or laptop. The deal from Amazon saved me about 70% over the full retail price offered on the Tivo website. Get it, you won't regret this purchase!!
11 months ago @ AmazonAfter reading some reviews we decided to go with the Series 3 rather than the plain HD Tivo because of the great price of the Series 3 on Amazon.com.
12 months ago @ AmazonIn summary, if you can provide the Series3 with an internet connection, a digital tv input, a standard tv input (cable) or if you have digital cable, the Series3 is a very solid well designed DVR recorder that makes maximum use of the TV guide info and the internet.
10 months ago @ AmazonBut once you clear this hurdle, you will be very pleased as I've been!
11 months ago @ AmazonI love my series 3. The front display is really cool in that it shows the Season pass programs that are recording on the front panel. You have separate lights for each tuner and another blue light when transfering programs.
11 months ago @ AmazonWe have been die hard TiVo users for years, and our only wish in the past, and what got us to use other's DVRs, was the desire for dual recording. With the Series 3 and built in dual CableCards, this is EVERYTHING we want!
12 months ago @ AmazonAlso, the DVR programming involved us weekly looking up when and where our favorite shows were coming on so we could update the Panasonic DVR recording schedule. Finally, I saw that the TiVo Series3 had a $200.00 rebate in addition to the Amazon discount so I ordered one from Amazon. When the Series3 arrived, the setup went well and we have been TiVo'ing ever since.
10 months ago @ AmazonFrustrated, I thought I would give the tivo, the years worth of service, and the wireless router (now about $800 in to this project) to my Dad and Step-Mom for the Holidays. They live in a comcast area with readily available cards.
10 months ago @ AmazonAs a typical gadget freak, I've been enjoying the various capabilities of this terrific unit and exploring several things I was not aware of when I first purchased it. Being able to access my home network (pictures, music, and videos) is simply terrific. THX sound quality?
