First I tried scissors, and after cutting off the edges off the blister, the package was still sealed tight. Then I tried cutting it with a knife, but the clamshell packaging is very thick and difficult to penetrate. A chainsaw cut right through it, but now, I'm not sure if the product will work.

A call to TomTom support, and about 30min of hold time, will get you a friendly and cheerful person who will promptly offer you a RMA# for a replacement unit said to arrive in a few weeks via a pre-paid Fed-Ex shipment. Apparently it's a known issue and TomTom is fully supporting replacements for all the defective units with no hassle. All in all it's a great, and slick GPS but MANY of them are defective.

the mac tomtom home software does not work. I am told by tomtom that a mac update is coming up early in 2008. Let's hope so, otherwise, from my point of view, the tomtom home software for mac, is worthless.

Normal view is only about 0.5 miles ahead, in 2D and 3D modes - you can scale out easily, but after about 10 seconds, it zooms back in. There are other ways to see segments of your route, but none that continuously update your position (that I have found yet.) I have asked about both of these in the forum discussions for this product, so maybe someone else knows if these are changeable.

every time you turn it on after setting your preferences you get a frozen white screen. you have reset the unit EVERY TIME you turn it on in order for it to work. there are TomTom forums on the web now with disappointed Christmas gift givers/ receivers with a bunk product.

However, it appears that thousands and thousands of these are defective from the factory. (Including mine) It works fine the first time you turn it on, but thereafter when turned on you get the "White Screen of Death," or WSD. You must then push the reset button with a paper clip to get it to work.

for example, there are two hierarchical menu items in their main menu, but you don't know that until you tap them (which means you sometimes forget what item you want to change is in what specific place); and you have only one direction of navigation through the menus (meaning if you want to go back to something on the last screen, you have to keep tapping to the right until you see it again). * there are some tiny bugs in their "shortest path" algorithm. it looks like extremely sharp right turns are somehow either ignored or wrongly compensated for so you can find yourself driving around a block to get to a destination (or possibly turning right and then doing a u-turn) rather than going a few extra feet and turning a sharp right.

But there is lots of POI's and streets missing on the TelAtlas maps. You would think that a Wal-Mart that has been around for 20 years in the same place would be in the correct place on the map, but its not. The street to it is not even there.

The big CON depends on who you are: if you like me have a problem following directions like, "make a right in 1/8 of a mile", instead of hearing street names then this product is not for you. If the lack of a text to speech feature doesnt matter to you, then this is a good basic GPS buy; you wont be disappointed.

Battery life (2 hours) is a concern, but, has not been an issue so far. It would be nice to have the unit display the name of the upcoming turn street, however, this has not been much an issue, either, due to timely voice commands. Interface can be confusing at times, but, perhaps it only needs a little practice to master.

But I've literally driven several miles in San Francisco without getting that initial lock, which sucks if you don't know where you're going. - It has no "text to speech" feature, meaning that it won't say "turn left on Folsom street" but "left turn in 200 yards". No big deal usually, but on freeway entrances this can be really confusing, especially if there's several of them in short order.

Because 80% of the time when I am lost I can't see the stupid street sign anyway. So why pay more for a useless feature?? This GPS will tell you within how many feet of your turn you are, so you know where the street is registered to be, and whether to turn left or right.

After four freeway changes, we arrived in the city and it directed us to three restaurants within walking distance and tracked us as we walked in a forest of tall buildings. The fact that it tells you the distance to turn right or left surprised me and made me a believer that turn at street name would not be good, but a minus.

Once done with that, they said I could re-download my maps, but not for about two days due to post xmas support overload on their servers. So here I sit with an unusable TomTom. Get a garmin, it may be more expensive but at least you can talk to someone to get it fixed.

Finally, and most importantly, the unit only guided to the correct destination on one of the first three addresses it was given.

TomTom One technicians advised me to find a Windows unit, load my TomTom One program, access my account, download the necessary maps and then transcribe them to my Mac laptop somehow. My flight leaves in three days and I'm just going to get a Garmin Nuvi 270 (transatlantic) model instead, and sell off this less than 4 month old TomTom.

On the return trip, part of the bypass route also had traffic, I hit the 'road block' feature and again, TT1 navigated me around the block through local roads and to the highway with ne'er a change in the arrival time. Anyone who has driven through the confusing DC inner roads will know how difficult such navigation is without detailed knowledge or maps of downtown Washington.

HOWEVER, I made the mistake of attempting to update the maps on my GPS to Version2. For about 12+plus hours spread over 3 days, I attempted with the hlep of customer support to install via TOMTOM HOME the updated maps, which I paid for. The end result: couldn't satisfactorily download the maps, the unit locked up, couldn't establish a HOME address as the GPS couldn't/wouldn't recognize it.

I was very disappointed to find that this unit does not have an SD card slot so I cannot use it with my UK maps. More money and less functionality, I'm very disappointed with TomTom.

TomTom Home 2 issues: When I try to use the TomTom Home 2 software to download the latest maps, I consistently get an "internal server error" which prevents me from moving forward with the download. I will call customer service to inquire about this, so I am hoping that there is a quick fix for this.

"New Edition" US version is noted as having the US/Canada maps preloaded, few to no bug reports and ready to run, out of box. The recent model in this series is Version 3; it has no SD card slot but has built in capability to make some corrections to its maps. I strongly suggest users leave their units on for 2-3 days connected to computer USB port to 'burn in' their units, and allow for premature failure, while under warranty.

The graphics were poor compared to the garmin, and the unit was overall far less intuitive. I sold it on eBay and bought a garmin nuvi. If you're debating between garmin and TomTom, don't waste your time and go straight to the garmin.

I also looked for restaurants and it does not allow you to scroll down beyond 20 choices so if you are in a busy commercial area you might overlook a good choice. Of course for instance that is if the map even picks it up it at one point gave me a choice of a pizza joint that literally has been closed for almost 5 years. If you want a cute popular gps that looks nice but functions poorly that is also inexpensive then buy this but if you want a accurate GPS that will actually help you get where you are going then go with a garmin or magellin.

I own a garmin Nuvi but was unable to bring it with me for this. If I didn't have the garmin to compare to I would have probably given this four stars. There are a few basic functions the garmin has that this really should.

This is ridiculous on a device meant to be used in the car while driving!!. Tom Tom allows you to update the map - Once - within 30 days after you buy it. I don't know how garmin and Magellan do this - but the devices are basically disposable unless you pay a stiff premium to keep your maps updated.

It directed me to a residential neighborhood (where I began to lose some confidence in its ability), then to the last house on a dead-end road (needless to say, I did not find the deli). The TomTom interface is not intuitive. For me, the biggest disappointment was its POI selection.

I hit the 'road block' option that suggests I'm stuck in traffic for 'X' miles. TT1 would tell me get off the next exit, turn around, make a turn here or there and follow a new route to bypass this X miles jam. I did this numerous times to check how it would reroute me in local driving & highway driving.

I entered GPS coordinates for addresses I had not been to but expect to visit. If faulty coordinates were given that terminated without roads, the TT1 quickly reported a route could not be plotted to that destination: you can navigate to the nearest turn off road if the coordinates are known. I arrived at all the plotted destinations flawlessly, following TT1 directions instead of what I would be told.

I spent about 500 mi traveling through these country roads. The supplied TT1 POI database is practically useless. Except in exceptional cases of carelessness, gas or rest stops marked were far from a preferred road stop: I knew some of those stops had poor food, rest room or gas prices, while the better stops were like a mini WalMart with gas prices often lower by as much as 25c/gal.

I had tried to find a route on MapQuest, and it kept taking me to a road that I knew had been closed over a year ago by the construction of a highway. The TomTom accurately routed me around to a newly made road that did not exist on MapQuest. We are still learning all of the features, but so far, it is living up to the ratings.

Firstly - the GPS unit POI thinks that Wal Mart is in Los Altos (a neighboring city) while the WalMart web site lists it as Mountain view. How does this get a POI as big as a Wal Mart wrong? The most sensible and fastest direction is to take Central Expwy almost all the way to the Wal Mart, and this is what Google Maps tells me - but this unit makes me take Central Expwy then exit Middlefield Rd and then take an extremely slow road (El Camino Real) to the WalMart.

The unit now runs on USA and Canada maps version 705.1481 provided by Tele Atlas. When compared to other GPS products on the market I've personally found that TomTom products have the edge when it comes to accuracy and map detail. The TomTom One is even polite enough to warn me when there is a toll road on a calculated route and then has enough courtesy to avoid it if I so desire, I've never gotten this kind of respect from my Garmin Nuvi 200.

I don't even know if the road it was showing was ever connected the other street on the other side of the lake. The Tom Tom does allow you to correct this and share the correction but I wonder how long it takes for this to show up on new maps...months, years, ever?

every time you turn it on after setting your preferences you get a frozen white screen. you have reset the unit EVERY TIME you turn it on in order for it to work. there are TomTom forums on the web now with disappointed Christmas gift givers/ receivers with a bunk product.

However, it appears that thousands and thousands of these are defective from the factory. (Including mine) It works fine the first time you turn it on, but thereafter when turned on you get the "White Screen of Death," or WSD. You must then push the reset button with a paper clip to get it to work.

And yes, every power cycle I got the WS of D (White Screen of Death). Would have to press the reset button to get around this to power up again each and every time! Took it back for a refund (Walmart has it for $148.

Battery life (2 hours) is a concern, but, has not been an issue so far. It would be nice to have the unit display the name of the upcoming turn street, however, this has not been much an issue, either, due to timely voice commands. Interface can be confusing at times, but, perhaps it only needs a little practice to master.

We put in only an address and it told us the route and name of an art house theater 50 miles away. After four freeway changes, we arrived in the city and it directed us to three restaurants within walking distance and tracked us as we walked in a forest of tall buildings. The fact that it tells you the distance to turn right or left surprised me and made me a believer that turn at street name would not be good, but a minus.

It seems to me that the call outs of street names would be more challenging to the driver, but I've never used this option so I don't know how the name call outs work. I bought it for $149, but i was ready to give $250 for it. I really can't understand some of the bad reviews here, because some of them talk about things that are not related to this GPS system.

While the TomTom One is well priced, the lack of verbal street name announcements is a MAJOR drawback. I didn't think this was sooo important, and as this unit was recommended by Consumer Reports, I ordered it, tried it and returned it. Also, when you go astray, the unit doesn't really let you know, it usually just directs you to turn around (something like...turn right, turn right, turn left)....

However, unlike the other devices I have tried, it does not notify you that it is "re-directing" you. I personally don't believe it is a big deal as long as it does a good job at putting you back on track. 2-When driving through side streets, the unit does not display the name of the next street to turn to on the top right corner.

I have this product for 2 weeks, initially I was not very happy with the performance as it was at times confusing to make the right turns without actually looking at the screen. But after updating the latest maps online and putting in the option of showing the street name which to turn, on the bottom of the screen has made it much easier to use and less chances of missing your turns. It has good options of tracking your speed and beep goes on if going above the acceptable speed, it has good display and easy to use, it has a good option of downloading the corrections of map made by others, It is really fast to calculate and recalculate the route,it has average up to date of Points of interest some of them do not exist anymore.

The TT1 tells you the name of the street on the screen well before a turn so why do you need it announced? I'm trying to think of something negative..battery life could be longer and I wouldn't mind having a map of Mexico. If you want an good basic inexpensive GPS that has most of the features of the big boys costing hundreds more then go for it.

It does not have text to speech but is a lot cheaper then units that do. I think Text to Speech is overrated. TTS will tell you the name of the street to turn on.

Also, I found it better when the GPS calls my turns and not the name of the street. The unit tells you to turn a certain distance from the turn and when the turn needs to be made.

Screen is small and difficult to see in direct sunlight...but this seems to be a problem with all GPS units. 4. Doesn't say the name of streets but this isn't a huge drawback
