How it sucks
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonSorry I returned Toshiba D-R400 for the reason that the remote control command does not respond what I see on a screen. I predict some thing wrong with R-400 machine or software inside the machine.
10 months ago @ AmazonOne review I read indicated that DVD recorders might not record movies from HBO or pay per view. I haven't tried pay per view but there was not any trouble recording HBO and HBO on Demand. When you put in a blank DVD, it only takes about 20 seconds until the D-R400 is ready to start recording.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe six and eight hour video recording rates are too grainy looking for me. The manual is okay, but needs more clarification on some recording features. I like the input access on the front panel for my computer connections using either standard video or S-video connections.
9 months ago @ AmazonThe remote is light and intuitive, but response could be a bit quicker. The D-R400 is somewhat noisy, but not like my old Lite-On, and the Lite-On was notorious for burning coasters galore.
10 months ago @ AmazonPlayback of media files, however, is where this unit falls short. It has problems with with widescreen DivX files and 4:3 televisions. Most DivX players will simply letterbox them, but the Toshiba crops the side edges and stretches the height.
12 months ago @ AmazonIt started out OK, but within 10 days it could not even recognize disks which it had recorded.
13 months ago @ AmazonAfter I make the original I tried to copy in computer using a video program but I am having problem with this any one know any short cuts or do I have to record them in a different mode on the DVD recorder, after I make a copies on the computer they only play on the computer Forked River, NJ
10 months ago @ Amazon(But you can play the DVD's on the D-R400 without finalizing them.) For playback, there is commercial skip as well as fast forward and fast reverse (up to 40x) plus slow forward and slow reverse. It also has chasing playback during recording so that you can play back what you are recording without waiting until the recording is completed. Some have said that the D-R400 will not record closed caption information; however they were wrong.
10 months ago @ AmazonI was hoping I could record all my Disney tapes but you can't. Overall I really like the quality of this unit. I could not get the recorder to switch to the front jacks, I called the hot line and in no time I had it working.
12 months ago @ Amazonxp=1 hour, slp=4 hours or whatever it is.(Like a VCR) One of the first discs I recorded came out pretty crappy at 6 hours. I changed it so I could only record 4 hours and it looks much better. I was recording through the Tivo box so not sure if that makes a difference or not.
10 months ago @ AmazonYou can choose to record in 1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour, 6 hour, or 8 hour mode, although the quality of 6 hour or 8 hour mode will not be as good. Although the D-R400 does not have a tuner, it does have a timer (12 timers) that you can set to record TV programs.
10 months ago @ AmazonI realize it is called a "tunerless" recorder but it didn't dawn on me that a digital tv wasn't good enough. I have tried looking at places for external tv tuners and have turned up a big goose egg. So now I have just another dvd player.
12 months ago @ AmazonIt even played back some material that had been recorded on the Insignia which the Insignia had decided was now on an "unknown disc." This model is nothing fancy, but if you're just ready to finally make the switch from VHS to DVD, this might be right for you. Be aware that---like most of the less expensive DVD recorders---it has no built-in tuner.
10 months ago @ AmazonI gave 4 stars because it does NOT record CLOSED CAPTIONS. If you need closed captions in your viewing later, it is not possible.
12 months ago @ AmazonI haven't used it for playing back on a HD TV set, since I don't have one yet. But I bought it for that purpose after reading the reviews on using it with HD sets. I'll buy a 1080 HD set later this year, but won't be too disappointed in the playback upconverting quality, since I know its limitations from the other reviews.
12 months ago @ AmazonEventhough the quality of the converted image is not obviously the same as if it was direct 1080p, the image is still very good.
9 months ago @ AmazonWhatever. Toshiba makes a wonderful product, and the D-R400 is no exception, while they are available. Since they are no longer manufacturing HD-DVD, now is the time to buy.
12 months ago @ AmazonWe bought the Toshiba hoping we could at least watch the ones that were finalized. When we got it home we found that we could actually watch the ones that were not finalized as well.
9 months ago @ AmazonI am sorry HD-DVD's will dwindle in the future, but this unit will still record and play most formats until the next "big thing".
10 months ago @ AmazonThe instruction book is very detailed, but good at explaining all the features. The remote control could be easier to read, but I am geting used to it. The bottom line is that the D-R400 is a very good choice for all your basic DVD recording needs at a reasonable price.
How it doesn't
click term for excerpts - most relevant excerpts first12 months ago @ AmazonThe recording side is easy to use and works great to my satisfaction as other reviewers have pointed out. The two fastest recording speeds have the best video quality, much like the older VHS formats with multi speeds. The two hour rate can be used for the older DVD players, but I use the four hour rate for saving most of my works with great video quality.
11 months ago @ AmazonMy boyfriend LOVES his new DVD player! Works perfectly and came in excellent condition. It was super easy to install and he just LOVES it!
12 months ago @ AmazonThe remote works well for my uses. Overall, this product works great for the many features and price with upconverting capabilities. I imagine someone will have a HD recorder in a year anyway.
12 months ago @ AmazonIt is definitely more complicated than a VCR. I probably won't use the multitude of features that this has, as all I want to do is put some old VHS tapes on a DVD. The price was right and since this is my first dvd recorder it appears I have picked a winner.
10 months ago @ AmazonThe Toshiba D-R400 DVD recorder is a great compliment to your Digital Video Recorder (DVR). After you've recorded a lot of movies or programs from your cable or satellite dish and the hard drive on your DVR starts to fill up, you can burn those videos to DVD with the Toshiba D-R400.
11 months ago @ AmazonBut what you can do depends on the media type (DVD+R, -R, +RW, etc). There is a handy chart that lists out the capabilities for the different DVD types. The user manual is one of the best I have seen so far.
12 months ago @ AmazonThe picture is nice and clear and even brighter. I am pleased. Overall, this is a good product - especially for the price!
13 months ago @ AmazonThis is a great recorder it performs better than I expected. My only question is I have old VHS Tapes converted from 8mm I need to make copies for siblings.
10 months ago @ AmazonI have been pleased with other Toshiba products and the reviews for this one were very good. I am very pleased with this unit. It makes excellent quality DVD's from tapes or the TV.
9 months ago @ AmazonIt's very easy to use and makes recording simple. A great buy!
12 months ago @ AmazonWe are more than happy with its performance so far. And thanks to all of those who wrote reviews. It helped us make a decision.
11 months ago @ AmazonMy first video, that is about 13 years old, was put to test. I connected my camcorder's S-video output for the best video quality possible. Connecting is easy due to the front input panel.
12 months ago @ AmazonI bought this Toshiba on the strength of some pretty good online reviews and a great price. I've had it about a month, and so far it works perfectly.
10 months ago @ AmazonI have had it produce some coasters when feeding it generic DVD's. Overall I have been very pleased because it has worked very well for copying programs from our DVR to DVD and for playing the DVD's we've purchased.
12 months ago @ AmazonI had a lite-on multi-formate before, and the menus where tedious, the Toshiba is easy, and works very well as both record and player, HDMI link is a wonderful connection to my HD set.
9 months ago @ AmazonThe upconvert process works beautifully, auto finalize simplifies recording, and regular dvd's look dandy, what's not to like? Pretty menus, nice displays, shows selected format to 1080p on the front panel.
10 months ago @ AmazonThis machine is great for DVD recording. It's easy to use and has plenty of features.
9 months ago @ AmazonIn the past two weeks of owning this, I've made more than two dozen recordings without any problems or errors encountered. I use the S-video output to my TV, as well as S-video inputs from the DVR and camcorder. The recording quality is excellent in SP mode (2 hour recording time), identical to the quality on my DVR recordings.
11 months ago @ AmazonNow, I can rest assured that my son's videos (now in digital) can be watched by my family years later. This D-R400 is one of the biggest bangs for the buck I have got in recent years!
11 months ago @ AmazonI have waited so long to convert my Hi8 tapes to digital. I was wanting that special converter and always wasn't sure which one was the best.
