How it sucks

I had to plug my xbox in downstairs) and when i put it in it would not connect to my wireless network when clearly nothing was wrong. After a one and a half phone call with xbox customer service they blatantly told me i was screwed and there was nothing i could do unless i happened to have another xbox console laying around. For the 100 dollars i paid for it i would expect a quality product and after this experiance i will not plan to buy any xbox brand product again.

When I tried this, the device located my network but (despite all efforts) would not connect. Microsoft tech support was not very helpful despite there diligent efforts to help. I did some digging on the Internet and discoved that this adapter does not always work well with certain routers.

I always suspected the reception was the culprit but I refused to believe that it was so poor when compared to my laptop's reception, which I tested in the same spot and had all the green bars on. Adjusting the 360 adapter's antenna and moving the console to a very specific spot in the room finally did the trick, but the connection was still inconsistent. Connecting to Xbox live took considerably longer than usual and I would get sudden disconnects in a middle of a game, which in the case of Xbox Live Arcade games, they stop when you are not connected to Xbox live, so it was very frustrating to watch my arcade games being interrupted in the middle of a session.

I would have to reboot it almost every time I fired up the 360 and the connectivity would get dropped frequently. I have a working understanding of networks but was unable to diagnose why this was occurring. Eventually I realized that I didn't want to waste hours trying different network and physical configurations - I wanted to get online, stay online and play games!

After some further exploration and several calls to Verizon, I was able to download a firmware update for the router which allowed it to locate and connect to my network. Though I was fortunate, from what I have heard, this solution may not always work. Had I not already opened the package, I would have returned it considering the hefty price tag.

To make sure that everything was ok, I ran the Xbox tests and they worked fine until they reached the Xbox live connectivity tests. In my case, they failed every time. My searches for solutions on the Internet lead me to many cases, but no concrete solutions and no indication that the error was related to the signal on the adapter.

If you do not know what these terms mean, you better get some help from someone who does, because Microsoft support in this area is pretty much nonexistent! Their support in this area is woefully inadequate. The tech guys in India, or wherever they may have been, were less knowledgeable about computing and these matters than I am, and totally useless.

Entering WEP/WPA security strings were a little tricky (the included instructions aren't clear, but you need to enter the hex string of characters, not your actual plain English passphrase), but once it's finished once, you forget about it for good. It's definitely debatable whether or not this wireless connectivity should be pre-installed on the 360 - basically, you're forced to pay an extra $100 to get the most out of your console. But if you plan on being online with your 360, then this adapter is the only way to go.

I have networking experience, so the process of setting up the adapter was familiar to me. However, I still had problems that were not that obvious at first glance. I noticed on the Xbox networking screen that the signal was weak, but I did have reception.

I gave this 2 stars because it does work, but it doesn't deserve the money that people spend on it.

The icing on the cake is the fact that (the $400) PLAYSTATION INCLUDES the Wireless adapter INSIDE the playstation. Not only that, but ALSO FOR YOU $400, you get a BLUE RAY DVD PLAYER that is better than most stand alone Blue Ray DvD Players. So for your crappy Xbox with a graphic card that doesn't hold a candle to Playstations, you get to pay an extra $100 for half the features of PS3.

This Wireless Adaptor will handle signal from the widely used G band, and the hardly ever used A band. As long as you get a wirelss adaptor that can shoot out an A band signal, this baby will catch it. The only good thing about making this a separate piece a good thing is so that as newer signals get created, such as the N band, the xbox can handle it when MS makes a suitable adaptor.

Though this is a necessary product for wireless networking via Xbox, it's hard to give this product a 1. I give it a 3 because of the Price, a ridiculous $99. Sorry, but I think $30-$50 would have sufficed.

Initally the xbox could not locate my network. I have a D-Link Dir-655 router which was set up with wpa2 only security. Contrary to the manual, the xbox network adapter does not work with WPA2.

On paper, it seemed that there would be no difference between wireless access points, so why drop the extra money on the official Microsoft adapter? Well, the Linksys was a disaster with the 360.

I tried others, they don't work and the 360 website specifically states that this is the only supported adapter. Search for "wireless bridge adapter" and get one of those instead.

This needs to test "open". If not, you will not be able to get online. Also, if you are on a secured wireless network, you need to supply a password, otherwise the Xbox cannot be assigned an IP address.

I recommend this as a good buy, but I wouldn't pay anything over $80 for this, you can always find a used one that will work just as fine...then mod it up.

It could be said that the setup of the adapter should be easy, but be aware of a few potential caveats. If you have a secured wireless hub or your SSID is hidden, or your hub is setup with MAC address security, and you have no idea of what I'm just talking about, then start looking for help or you'll be scratching your head for a while before getting the adapter to work.

The last reason this is worth the extra money (but also a bad thing) is because it does not use a power supply, and it plugs directly into the Xbox 360. Unfortunately, it does take up a USB port, but if you have a USB hub (like me, because I play Rock Band a lot, and also have the Vision Camera hooked up 24/7) this will not matter a bit.

How it doesn't

The wireless adapter is literally hooked up in seconds and once you set up xbox live gaming online is flawless. The adapter had no compatibility problems with my Linksys wireless router.

My console was located on the 2nd floor of my house. The wireless hub was in the basement, where I have my office and some additional space my in-laws were using.

Our wireless router provides strong reception throughout our home with other wireless cards, e.g., laptop computer. The XBox 360 adapter must be relatively close to the router.

I have my xbox 360 in another room, on the same floor as my wireless router and I have no problem with a connection. The wireless adapter connected to my netgear router without any problems. Using this is so much easier than trying to run extra cables to have internet connection!!

I must say this is too expensive, and that's the ONLY bad thing I can think of about it. Search the internet for the cheapest price you can find.

So I ordered the official XBox 360 Wireless Network Adapter and have been very pleased.

Other game adapters need you to go in and change the IP addresses and whatnot. Second, this has much better performance than the other game adapters. I went to my friends house to play Gears of War, and he had the Linksys Game Adapter, and the lag was unbelieveable.

oooooooooooooooo 100 dollars soo expensive. Now ask yourself this question.

The gaming experience is great though. You can play people online, your friends, or someone in the UK.

I've always used my 360 in a wired setting. My in-laws had to stay for a few weeks at my place so I had to move my Xbox upstairs to give them some privacy. Finally I had a justification to purchase the expensive wireless adapter for my console.

Unless your wireless hub is unsecured, you have to be familiar on how to enter a WEP hex code on the console network settings.
11 months ago @ Amazon
You can easily get a good router for much cheaper price.

The Xbox 360 wireless network adapter is a necessity for those of us who game online and don't have a hub or router next to our console.

the fun stars are unappropiate for this type of review, yet I applied that to how well it works. It works flawlessly.

Ease of use and configuration makes this worth the extra $30 to $40 more dollars it costs than competing products from other vendors like Linksys and D-Link. No hassle set up and connection to my wireless WPA secured and MAC address filtered wireless network at home.
12 months ago @ Amazon
But at all costs, the best thing to do is to have your Xbox hooked up directly to the router.
13 months ago @ Amazon
Works great...once it's connected to the network.
